  • Powerpoint to Vegas Import?

Posted by Chas Smith on August 20, 2008 at 5:43 pm

I’ve never done this but is there a way to import a Powerpoint presentation with photo images & graphics files into Vegas? And what about “jaggies” in the logos? Is there a way to reduce or eliminate those?

I normally get .jpegs, .bmp or .png formats directly but the original files for this project are missing and all they have is a powerpoint presentation showing the history of this non-profit group. (Because it was a mostly volunteer group, no one kept archives of any media files except for this powerpoint presentation).

    Any help is much appreciated.

In PowerPoint, Save As, and choose a graphic format, probably png or jpg, and it should ask if you want every slide. Say yes, and you will get a folder with each slide in your graphic format ready to go on the timeline in Vegas.

    Hi Mary:

Thanks for the “how-to” on Ppt to PNG. Now the only issue it seems is that the slides of logos have “jaggies” when I import into Vegas 6.0. Is there a setting I need to select? When I look at the converted slides (logos) pre-import, they look fine. It’s only after I drag and drop in the proj media files and then place on the timeline that they appear “jagged” in the Best Full View on my video preview.

    Thanks for your assist,

    Chaz

Right-click on one of them and select the Reduce Interlace Flicker option.
Let us know if that helps.

I would try saving as .tif in PowerPoint. This is the highest resolution export available. If the logo still looks bad, it probably has something to do with the format of the logo graphic originally inserted into the slide.

    Hi Mike:

Thanks for the instruction. Did the “right-click/reduce interlace flicker” but it’s still the same. There’s no “flicker” in playback, it’s just the logo has the dreaded “stair-step” look after I import into Vegas. The ppt slides and converted slides to .png look fine. I even imported a slide into Adobe Freeware Business Edition (very stripped version of an early Photoshop SW) it looked fine and I saved it to .bmp, imported and still have jaggies.

I did a CAMSTUDIO Screencap in AVI of the Ppt, imported into Vegas…still jaggies. I guess I could use my XH-A1 and shoot the screen for a logo image. But I was hoping there would be a quicker, less cumbersome way to do this via software.

I’m stumped…( I’ve never fooled with importing Ppt so I’m really stumbling around here). Thanks for your help and if you have any other ideas, I’m all ears.

Mary, due to the fact that a Tif will make a call to QuickTime each and every time it’s used, it’s not the recommended format for use in Vegas.
As was suggested ealier, PNG is one of the better ones to use.

Chaz, try a very small amount of Gaussian Blur (.001 to .003) in the vertical direction only and see if that helps.

    Hi Mike:

Thanks for the tip. Did the gaussian blur vertical only .001 to .003. Softened a tad but the jaggies are still there. Any more increase and everything is just too soft.

May just do the “shoot-the-screen” with the XH-A1 and see what I can pull from that. I’ll try the TIFF for logos only and see what I can pull from those in Vegas. While it’s not preferred, doing just the logos and getting a good freezeframe is all I need. If that doesn’t work… shoot the screen.

Thanks to everyone for the help, I learned some things.

Chaz, a few more things to try before you give up.

A guy named Liam Kennedy wrote a utilty called Powerpoint Image Exporter that may be of some help.
This FREE tool enables you to convert your Powerpoint presentation into a sequence of still images (jpeg, gif, png formats supported) at any resolution (size) you require.
Use it and save the images out at at least twice your project resolution and let Vegas handle the downsampling.
You may still need to use a Gaussian Blur but this may help.

Apply the Match Output Aspect (in the Pan/Crop window) to all of them to correct for this.
Apply the Secondary Color Corrector FX at the Track level and choose the Computer RGB to Studio RGB preset.
This will make sure that the luminance levels fall within the 16-235 range that Vegas likes to see.

Had the same problem. I just put the powerpoint into full screen mode, used the PC function Shift/print screen, paste the clipboard into photoshop and saved as whatever. Import that file back into Vegas with very good results. (no jaggies)
