I’m wondering if I should buy a power mac G5 or wait for the new mac book pro that may have quad core or the core i7 or whatever else it’s supposed to have. I edit mostly SD but I’m sure I’ll be upgrading to HD soon. I’m guessing the G5 can handle HD? I edit on a mac book currently and I’m in dire need of an upgrade. I like the G5 because of the PCI cards, an esata card would be awesome. The G5 is relatively cheap now also… I am a college student.lol

Just tell me what you think. Thanks for you’re help!

[Andrew Evans] “I edit mostly SD but I’m sure I’ll be upgrading to HD soon. I’m guessing the G5 can handle HD?”

HD is such a generic term. Like saying “i’m going to be buying a vehicle.” What TYPE of vehicle? Bicycle? Motorcycle? Car? Truck? Tank?

What formats of HD will you be working with? The G5 is a 5 year old machine, and cannot deal with many of the new HD formats, like AVCHD, AVCIntra, XDCAM…a host of others. I highly recommend against the G5 and for a MacBook Pro. And buy when you need. Don’t wait for updates. Who knows WHEN they happen. Buy when you need. I have a current MBP and it handles all the current formats of HD fine. Well, I haven’t tried RED yet. And no, the G5 wouldn’t be able to handle RED at all.

But if you like the PCIe cards and all that, get a refirb MacPro. They sell them on Apple pretty cheaply.

It would probably be AVCHD. Thanks for the advice. I don’t really need it right now, I’m just kind of a gadget/hardware collector.

The problem with the G5 is it is at a dead end, while you don’t have to update/upgrade, there are no more upgrades for the G5s, Snow Leopard and FCS are Intel only. Plus unless you get a quad core G5 with PCIe slots any card you buy cannot be used when you go to an Intel system.

Look at first or second generation Mac Pros you can get them for less than a MBP, a lot less.

AVCHD has to be transcoded into something else to edit so the Intel would help speed that process up.
