Post-production workflow, the right/common order
Hey there,
was asking myself what is the common order (if there is one) to do things in post when editing is done. Scrubbed the web already but didn’t found anything precise and thought “hey .. let’s ask the pro’s”.
To specify the question: wondering if e.g. color correction is done pre fx and compositing. So does the color correction guy send his graded material to the fx guy etc.. Or vice versa?
Is there even a common order or is it more like everything is done simultaneously. Tried to get behind when what is done and, if there is an order, whether the department which is first in the chain is done after sending the stuff to the next one, or does it have to roundtrip later on?Hope this was understandable .. my english is not the best.

Generally color grading comes after VFX so your VFX guys should be comfortable with flat unsaturated look. Motion graphics like titles and logos is another story. Often international deliverables must be without titles so it is often makes sense to grade first when create motion graphics. Now with technology advancements it is possible to “pregrade” — have your look in a separate file like look-up table or Color Decision List. That allows VFX guys to turn the grade on and off while working. The grade is not baked in.
