Poor playback performance to external monitor
Hi,
Like everybody and their dog, I’m a long time FC user that’s in process of transitioning to a new cutting platform.
We mostly shoot RED, and I’m quite impressed with PP 5.5’s ability to deal with RED footage natively. Performance scales pretty well from MacBook Pro’s to the big towers.
In summary if I want to work in the UI and have no need for external scopes or monitors, life is pretty good.
BUT… when I want to view playback on an external monitor performance is just crap.
As a baseline we have very capable machines, current generation MacPro towers with 24GB ram or better, fast (>800 MB/s) raids, Quadro 4000 or GTX 285’s, with or without Rocket, and we’ve got both the Kona 3G and the DeckLink HD Extreme 3D. I’ve tried output via HDSDI (preferred) and HDMI.
I’ve tried combinations of these with various codecs but even with the Kona card and the Rocket, performance is unacceptable.
To get output to the scopes and calibrated monitor I’ve had to choose a sequence preset defined by one of the output cards codec sets. i.e. a BlackMagic 1080p 23.976 sequence or an AJA equivalent.
While that provides a signal to the scopes and monitor, playback is quite slow, a few frames a second at best.
This continues to be true with resolution playback set to it’s lowest levels.
I really like the ability for short form not to have to transcode via Rocket to 1080P at the outset which has been our workflow until now.
Am I missing something obvious? Or just this just not work very well?
Thank you in advance for your assistance,
Stephen
