    I have AE 7.0 (hopefully soon, CS4)

Where is a good place to find free plugins – I looked at Toolfarm, but it seems hard to separate the trials from actual free plug-ins, and there is no rating system for them…

Can anyone point me to some awesome plugins?

Also, are plug-ins just complex expressions people have created, or brand new code that could potentially screw up After Effects?

    Thanks all!

I don’t think of plug-ins as being the same thing as expressions or animation presets. They generally add additionally functionality that is not possible via scripts/expressions/animation presets.

They’re specifically coded to do something new and useful that AE could not otherwise do (or do something that AE already does, only better). There may be compatibility issues but a plug-in should never cause any permanent damage to After Effects… if it’s buggy you can just remove it and forget about it.
