Please help! What’s the best way to make PAL dvd from 23.98p NTSC footage?
I asked this on the Apple forum but didn’t get an response. I live in the U.S. but am traveling to Ireland in a week and need to be able to make DVDs that will play on their TVs. My footage is NTSC 23.98p material (film originated and pulldown removed in Cinema Tools). I’m editing from DV25 copies as an ‘offline’ and have uncompressed 10 bit ‘online’ files (also at 23.98) for the final edit. There seems to be some confusion as to whether NTSC material will play on PAL TVs. Graham Nattress says it plays on all TVs made in the last 20 years but at 4% faster speed, others say only certain PAL TVs will play the stuff back. So, I was wondering if:
1- I should just make NTSC 29.97 60i DVDs
2- I should make 23.98p DVDs (had been using the 29.97 60i preset so far)
3- Standards Converter might help in some way, though its site seems to say it won’t work with 23.98p or 24p stuff
4- I should just render out a 23.98 QuickTime file and convert it in Vegas (my former NLE) to either A) an interlaced PAL MPEG-2 or B) a progressive PAL MPEG-2
5- Doing any of the above might yield a better-looking result if I used the uncompressed 10bit material.Sorry for the long post, but I’m a newbie to FCP and especially to conversions of this nature. So any help is greatly appreciated!
