  • Please help… Trying to output TV shows from FCP 4.5 (os10.4.3) to DSR 45 “edit to Tape” Please help.

    First time using this configuration.

Trying to output to a DSR 45 from G4 (Dual1.0Gig)

I have a blackburst generator going into the deck and into FCP via a Blackmagic Decklink Extreme.
I am using FIREWIRE for audio, video and deck control

I have succesfully (as far as I can tell) blacked the tape using the FCP tape blacking dialogue from within the Edit To Tape window. I have blacked it with 30 seconds of preroll before my sequence’s first frame.

When I attempt an assemble edit by droping my sequence into the “assemble edit” box in the Edit to tape window everything seems to work fine until… the deck shuttles to the approximate timecode of my sequence start… shuttles back and forth a bit (as if looking for the exact input) and then gives up with the message:

” The end of tape has been encountered”

Also, while the deck struggles to find the in point on the tape… the timecode display intermittently shows another (seemingly unrelated) timecode.

I have no idea what I’m doing wrong. I’m sure it’s just one or two toggles on the deck. The time code section of the menu is set as follows:

    TC PRESET: 09;57;30;00
    UB preset: 00;00;00;00
    TC/UB IN: TC&UB EXT
    DV IN TC: INTERNAL
    TC MAKE: PRESET
    TC RUN: REC RUN
    TC FORMAT: DF
    JOG TC OUT: OFF

I am outputing 4 tracks of audio via the firewire (I assume this is irrelevant)

IN conclusion… I just want to edit to tape (Assemble edit) a 24 minute TV show to DV cam.

If anybody has a suggestion or can see where I am screwing up please tell me. My time is running out as I scan the deck manual.

I had that same problem with the same setup. The only way I found to write to tape was using the “Master to Tape” command. Yes… I stripped tape too but it still did not work correctly. You can “Master to Tape” just fine.

When you black a tape sometimes you forget to rewind it, when you try to edit to that tape because of threading etc the edit system can not find timecode because threading has put the tape past TC. Its a silly thing for sure, but it happens.

Of course now that you have blacked your tape and rewound it there is no reason to assemble, do an insert, there is already control track and TC on the tape.

There are enough variables to setting up your timeline and using other features of FCP that the problem you are mentioning could have many sources.

Generally speaking, put ins and outs on your timeline for where you want the program to start and end. This can mean that an in comes several seconds before the actual program content.

Sorry for sounding so lame, or should I say seeming to infer that you are lame, its just that there are so many reasons things can go wrong I just want to hit a few of the more obvious issues, sorry again.

As a general rule, start you program at one hour straight up, 01:00:00:00. on the timeline, You might want to or be required to put in 2-5 seconds of pad at the top. You might also want bars and tone as well as some kind of slate. When everything is accounted for, put your in point at 00:59:30:00. Stripe your tape at 00:58:00:00 up until past one minute. Use the black tape icon.

In the edit to tape window in the lower left hand little time code box type in where you want things to begin, usually its at 00:58:30:00, hit enter, drag the sequence to the edit to tape window for insert (if you have rewound the tape, and striped it before 00:50:30:00. Should work, as I remember. I have been doing Avid for a while so I might be too confident, but that

    Thanks for your response…

By “Master to tape” command do you mean : Print to video?

What we ended up having to do was using the EDITING instead of MASTERING function (within “EDIT TO TAPE”). I can’t
say why but this works… all other things being equal. Because the mastering options did not exist we added 4 min of black at the end to fill out the tape.

Most importantly: when we blacked the tape the deck was set to PRESET. When laying the show back to tape the same setting in the deck was set to REGEN.

Thanks for your responses. All of those options were tried and eliminated over the day. this was the one that worked.
