So I make animation videos based on drawing material with After Effects and my general output is 4:3 PAL DVD for video projection. I usually create a large composition first (custom), and then place it in a DV composition for rendering. After that I convert my DV file with Apple Compressor for creating a ‘DVD video file’.

My question is the following: when shall I use or not use Square pixel in my working process? My Photoshop files are usually square pixel because I don’t use pre-formatted files. But when I start working with After Effect, what shall I use? Square pixel OR NOT?

So far I have been working fully in square pixel. My DV output looks narrow on screen computer but it gets back to normal aspect rectangle when I convert it for DVD. I am wondering if it is the best practice though.

Please! Set me free! I need to work! 🙂

You can continue working on square pixel aspect ratio in PS.

Do activate “Aspect Ratio Correction” button in AE comp window so you can see your graphics as intended on PAL TV. However, keep in mind what you will be seeing after the “correction” will not be pixel-to-pixel accurate.
