  • PLEASE HELP: Boris Title 3D Crashes… everything else seems OK

Posted by Justin Keen on June 12, 2009 at 2:00 am

    Just started recently…

When I try to launch Boris Title 3D in fcp (either direct in the viewer or applied in a sequence, I get a beachball followed by fcp quitting and the error message about fcp unexpectedly quitting and pointing to Boris Title 3D as the culprit.

I have taken many remedial measures without success:
    1. Trashed ~/Library/Preferences /com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
    2. Trashed ~/Library/Preferences/Final Cut pro User Data/Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs, Final Cut Pro Obj Cache.fcmch, Final Cut Pro Prof Cache.fcpch
    3. Performed a complete reinstall following instructions here: Final Cut Pro: Troubleshooting Basics https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1846?viewlocale=en_US
    4. Created new fresh user account and tried to launch from the virgin account (I have found this frequently solves this kind of issue, but not today)

    We’re running OS X 10.5.7, fcp 6.0.5, QT 7.6.2 on the last 4 x 2.5GHz PowerPC G5

I’m getting exhausted – I need a solution – and I have a MacBook Pro with exactly same versions of the software / OS and does not have this issue.

    Any help will be appreciated…

    Thanks

Have you added any fonts recently? I had a similar issue one time and it was a bad font that I had to remove.

Don’t know if this will help, but there is also a Boris pref you could trash:
    Users>Library>Preferences>com.borisfx.Title 3D

Could also be a memory issue. Make sure you close other applications, timelines etc.

Thanks to those who have offered suggestions.

    > Walter, I removed all but the original installed set of basic and sustem fonts and that didn’t truck – and I have trashed all the prefs, and of course, have done a complete fcp re-install, all to no avail.

Yesterday I received this post on another forum from Nathan Rausch:

I have noticed Software updates of 10.5.7 or QT 7.6.2 have been breaking the validity of the bundle files that are the Boris Plugins.

    Download:
    https://www.borisfx.com/download_files/CalligraphyForFCP.dmg

    Put these files in:
    /Library/Application Support/FinalCutPro system support/Plugins/
    Overwriting the existing files.

    Trash the following:
    HOME > LIBRARY > PREFERENCES >
    com.boris.Text Scrambler
    com.boris.Title 3D
    com.boris.Title Crawl
    com.boris.Vector Shape

Restart and Boris should be back to life.

Have seen this several times in the last few weeks.

As this single suggestion reflected a complete flow including several other suggestions received, I followed all the steps and now the four Boris bundles no longer appear in fcp.

So the problem remains unsolved! (Well I don’t get the crashes any more, but that’s only because I can no longer see the bundled apps in fcp!)

    – I guess I have to learn to live without Boris Title 3D – but now I have to convince all the other users in our corporate workflow to do the same – and use another method for slating – and hope I don’t have to work on too many archived projects…

It is curious though – did QT 7.6.2 break the Boris fcp bundle, and if so, should we expect Apple to be the one to offer the fix?

    Justin

p.s. You might say it is easy to live without Boris Title 3D, and while that may be true, I work in a collaborative workflow and Title 3D has been used for ever and a day for slating and comments (we tend to use title 3 D and now motion for the production work – but title 3D is convenient because it formats easier than fcp’s titler, and all the Title 3D data is carried forward in an fcp xml export, while Livetype and Motion require additional project files)

[Justin Keen] “You might say it is easy to live without Boris Title 3D”

Heck no Justin, I don’t think many here would say that. Boris Title 3D is is an essential part of the suite.

I would recommend that you call the nice folks at Boris. Their technical support team is very helpful, especially to folks from the Creative Cow. I had a similar issue to yours a few years ago and they figured out a fix that worked.

    Hi Justin,
You need to delete the Boris Receipts as well.
Otherwise the plugins don’t get re-installed.
In Library/ Receipts> CalligraphyLangPack, CalligraphyPlugins and CalligraphyPresets.

    Hi,

The disappearance of the 4 Boris Calligraphy bundle apps was because I had accidentally dropped them in the incorrect directory – but now having done everything step by step again, including deleting the Calligraphy receipts, the apps appear again, but Title 3D still crashes the system.

NOTE: I am not reopening existing Title 3D clips – though this also results in the crash – I’m trying to create virgin clips here.

Does anyone know how to read a crash report? There is a lot info in there that must give a clue as to what is going on…

Walter wins the prize for this one! The culprit turned out to be 25 fonts that Title 3D just don’t like – Although, as Walter suggested, these were not recently installed fonts at all – they had been around for some time, but I guess the recent Leopard upgrade may have made Title 3D more vulnerable to bad fonts.

As for the BorisFx support team, I have to agree with David that their support was nothing but exceptional, especially considering this was an issue with a bundle and not at all related to any recent purchase made from them. From the getgo, thr operator who answered the call and cheerfully passed me on to support – who stayed with me and exhaustively tested everything step by step leaving no stone unturned until the bug was revealed.

Thanks BorisFx Support! (Kind of makes me want to blow the cobwebs off my old trusty Media 100)

By contrast, Apple support gave the usual list of preferences to trash then sent me instructions for a complete FCP S2 re-install.

However – that is not a grumble, and a big shout out to all who responded!

Great you foiund a solution, as I have the same issue.
One question, was it enough to not use one of these bad fonts in text 3d or did you have to remove them from the system.. I have a huge, messy font folder, been meaning to tidy etc etc.. no time etc etc… How on earth did YOU track down the culprits?
