  • Playback problem – Canvas won’t display movie

Posted by Gary Sprung on December 4, 2007 at 4:07 pm

We just moved a Final Cut Pro project to a new iMac 24inch 2.8ghz computer, on 500gb external drive. The movie does not show in the Canvas window. The Canvas instead has the big red bar with the words “Media Offline” and in smaller type, second line, “PrintToVideoVideo.” The clips in the Browser are NOT offline. We can select a clip in the timeline or in the browser and it will play in the viewer.

Also, the audio does play through the Canvas/timeline.

We have looked at the setting in FinalCutPro…Audio/Video Settings. The Video Playback menu has the options None or Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Main (which I guess is our 24″ iMac monitor). Either way, the problem remains. Same with View… Video Playback.

Anyone know how to fix this?

    Thanks,
    Gary

    Hi,
I’m just starting a project shot on DVCProHD 30p. My material was imported from P2 media. I can’t seem to get the movies to move. The frame that the playhead is parked on will display in the canvas window and the external monitor, but it won’t show anything else when the playhead is in PLAY. When it stops, then it shows the new frame that its parked on. I can manually move the playhead in the timeline to reveal all frames and motion, but it won’t show on its own.

For the record, my sequence settings are
    960×720 HD 16×9
    Anamorphic is checked
    Field dominance is NONE
Compressor is for DVCProHD60p (my media was shot 30p, but that is not a selectable option)

As far as I can tell, the media settings match the sequece settings. Is there some other obscure box I forgot to check or setting I forgot to tweak?
    Thanks,
    David

    Gary,
Sorry, but I accidentally responded to your inquiry with my own problem. We have slightly similar issues, so I was looking at your situation when I composed my own. Sorry for the false alarm and here’s hoping that yours is an easy fix.

    Gary,
The problem was combination of Sequence Settings issues in FCP and my Kona card. If you want to give me a call, I’ll share with you all of my settings. Do you have a Kona card in your system?

    Hi David,

I know this was a while back but I’m having the same problems as you. I trashed my fcp prefs because it kept crashing while rendering and now the canvas won’t display the movie in playback. Could you let me know what you did? Also I don’t think I’ve got a kona card?

    many thanks
