  • Playback on Varicam of footage recorded on 1200A

Posted by Charlie Kendall on June 22, 2005 at 4:09 am

I want to playback a finished program for a client on the Varicam while in the field. The finished program was recorded onto our 1200A deck from our edit system. When I play the tape, I get no video or audio, just a beeping red light. Yet, it plays fine on the 1200A deck. Is this possible to do? Do I need to change menu settings on the deck or on the camera to enable this? Any insight will be appreciated.

    Variable Thanks,
    Charlie

    Hi Charlie:

The newer AJ-HD1200A and AJ-HD1700 decks record to tape with the new 9um track pitch DVCPRO HD EX format, this doubles the record time on the tape over the older (18um) format as used in the VariCam and the older AJ-HD130/150 decks. The new 1200A / 1700 decks can play any DV /DVCPRO tape, alas the older units, (the 130/150 / VariCam) can only play the original 18um DVCPRO HD format. This is why the VariCam doesn’t play the tape you recorded in the 1200, sorry.

We made the decision to move to the newer 9um format to provide users with long record times on small tapes, it also effectively halves the tape cost per hour, in this way the 1200 can record for a maximum of 92 minutes.

    Sorry for the bad news,

    Cheers!

On a similar note… is it possible to digitize footage directly from the Varicam, thru HD-SDI (w/a Kona2 card) and into FCP? Kind of a crazy question… but we own a Varicam, but not (yet) a deck. If it worked, it would be a nice short-term solution for some lower budget projects.

yes you can BUT, it chews up the tape transport and FCP cannot read the Tape TC over HDSDI so all you can do is crash capture. so no offline/ online possibility.

Are we talking serious problems for the camera? As I mentioned, this is a short term solution (maybe two or three months) with minimal playback through the camera (mostly our own test footage, maybe one small project– probably no more than ten tapes total over a period of three months).

    Thanks for the info.
