Playback issues
A while back I posted about a problem I had in Premiere Pro that didn’t get solved.
I can do everything there is to be done in Premiere, but when I playback my sequence or clip in both the program and source monitor, rendered or not, the playback pauses after a few seconds. It seems to be at random, sometimes it’s after 2 seconds, sometimes 10.
Now I couldn’t find a solution so I thought there might be some problems with my ati hd6870 and the mercury enginge or something so I tried a few different things and found Edius. Weird thing is, it suffers from the same problem!I have 2 HDD’s in my setup, 1 WD Caviar green 1.5TB and 1 WD RE4 500GB. I am aware the caviar green isn’t exaclty the fastest, but even when I use files on the smaller HDD the problem occurs.
I can’t seem to figure it out, but as far as I know, the problems only occured once I installed the second HDD.
I’m a bit lost here, I bought this pc not a year ago to be able to take this hobby a bit more seriously and it has only caused me problems ever since…I hope someone can help me 🙂
My complete setup:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T (@ 3.5GHz)
GPU: PowerColor Radeon HD6870
Ram: 8gig Kingston Value Ram (4×2) 1333
Primary HDD: WD RE4 500gb
Secondary HDD: WD Caviar Green 1.5tb -

Hi Tom,
It could be a hard drive going into standby mode. The delay would occur when the drive spins back up. That can happen even if Premiere isn’t using the drive.

Do you know if this is something I can control or turn off or is it a hardware matter?
This still doesn’t explain why the problem also occurs when I use the other HDD..Tom

I finally found the solution, and it was as small and stupid as I thought it was 🙂
I have a CM 690II advanced case, with an audio jack in the front panel. From the first time I booted, the audio manager started freaking out whenever I plugged a jack in. The connection is good, so either it’s a broken cable, but with a good enough connection for me to hear my audio smoothly, or a software problem. I never thought of this, since I turned the notifications off (found that ‘solution’ online, a lot of people were having problems with this, hooray for realtek drivers lol) but it seems this is what’s buggin premiere pro.
It makes sence come to think of it.I thought there was a problem with ppro and my hardware, but I encountered the same problem when I tried Edius, so I knew it wasn’t ppro’s fault.
Anyway, I’m happy to be editing properly again, I hope this helps someone with a similar problem 🙂
For now, I’ll use my headphones for editing, untill I find the time to fix the bad connection.
