  • Playback Issues 1080HD From Canon 5D MKII

Posted by Dan Seibert on March 21, 2010 at 9:55 pm

I’m working with some HD video shot from a Canon 5D MKII. It’s 1080 at 30fps (not 29.97). It’s not choppy during playback, but between cuts the last frame holds for about 5 frames and then shows the next clip. Is there anyway to fix this issue?

I’m working on a MacBook Pro with 4GB of Memory and 2.8 GHz processor with the dual graphic cards running at 256 and 512.

Try making the sequence viewer at exactly 100% scale.

And although you say it is 30fps did you try dropping a clip into a new sequence had say yes to have the sequence conform to the clip? Then see what the sequence settings are.

Finally try making a 1080 sequence at 29.97 and see if that will solve the playback issue.

I’ve used Compressor to make 29.97 versions of true 30fps files. However, Canon just released the FCP plugin that allows easy ingest of their EOS DSLR files.

John, I can only find the pdf instruction manual, not the actual FCP software via that link. I have read that Canon were releasing this software, but a search of their site didn’t reveal it as an available download?

Do you have a direct link for this software?

I DO! It is part of my latest STOCK ANSWER:

    #51 – Canon 5D MkII / Canon 7D footage into FCP

Shane’s Stock Answer #51 – how do you bring in footage from the Canon 5D and 7D cameras into FCP to edit?

You need to use Compressor to convert all of the Canon 5D MkII footage from the H.264 format that it records, to ProRes 422 at 29.97 progressive. Make SURE that you convert the frame rate to 29.97fps, as the camera shoots 30fps straight up, not 29.97. Then you can use the ProRes 422 Easy Setup.

(If you are in PAL country, convert the footage to ProRes 422 at 25fps)

Yes, the file sizes get drastically larger. H.264 is an acquisition and delivery format, not an editing one.

There is also a LOG AND TRANSFER plugin available for FCP, and that is found here:

    CANON

Here is a tutorial on how to use it:

Shane, that link is the same as John Pale’s link and the trick is to select the OS before the software comes up. The firmware for the camera which fixes the frame rate and audio sample rates is also there, before you change the settings for OS

So you will have to change your stock answer to indicate that there is the firmware to fix the frame rate & sample rate issues plus the FCP plugin after selecting OS

Shane – not to confuse the (always excellent) stock answers, but have you considered including Mpeg Streamclip as an option for transferring DSLR footage. Not only is it simpler to setup for typical DLSR users, it’s also quicker than compressor to convert. The batching process is child’s play as well. I think some people are put off by Compressor.

Mpeg Streamclip gives patchy results, especially temporal problems with fields and was the main reason why I setup this for my UK broadcast work:-

However, the plugin is the way to go now as it has many advantages, one of them being the transfer of metadata.
