I take a lot of footage on 8mm tapes (Hi8/Digital8 camera) and at the moment I capture everything through PPro by simply hooking the camera up to the Firewire port. However, I’m wondering if anyone out there has suggestions for an actual tape deck so I don’t have to use the camera every time. Something I can plop the tape in, and capture the same way.

Ideally I’d like the capture process to go faster, but I don’t even know where to start with that one. I’m looking for suggestions here…

The best thing is another D-8 camcorder, look in pawnshops or on ebay, a new D-8 would still be cheaper than a D-8 deck, a sony gvd-200 walkman deck is about $550 new, a gvd-800 is $650, although you can look for a used one on ebay.
