Pixillation!
Posted by Sean Hargreaves on July 20, 2008 at 2:27 amWhy are my still images pixillated? The original sizes are 10″x5″ and 300dpi. Painful, very painful!

July 20, 2008 at 1:01 pmDPI and inches mean nothing in the video world, it’s all about pixels. If you have a 1280×720 sequence, you need a 1280×720 (pixels!) still. You can usually get away with a slightly smaller image that scales up before pixellation shows up though. Having said that, 10″x5″ at 300 (pixels per inch) not DPI, should be 3000×1500 pixels in size, more than enough for 1080 video. Were the originals very small and uprezzed when scanned? Are they scaled correctly in FCP?

July 20, 2008 at 2:05 pm1) Check in the render dropdown that Full is checked before rendering. It’s not checked by default.
2) If you’re monitoring only the canvas on your computer monitor that’s not going to display at full resolution, as RT settings are by default optimized for realtime playback. You can change the settings to drop the framerate and display at full res., but you should be monitoring on a real video monitor, not a computer monitor if you really want to judge quality.
3) And finally, set the canvas size to 100.
If your pix are still pixilated then you some other issue, such as a bad scan.
