When I burn my video there is severe, dizzying, pixelation on the DVD.
The original footage formats AVCHD 1080 50i and DV PAL. The sequence was set for the HD footage, and everything looks pretty good in FCP. I have exported to Quicktime, both as DV PAL 48 KHZ and the with Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i 50 (which seemed a bit better). There was a little noticeable pixelation while watching the Quicktime file on the computer, but at least watchable. When I burned to DVD using Toast (the only option I had here was PAL), the DVD image gets much more degraded. Especially when panning things like palm or bird’s wings, although it is noticeable with any camera movement.

Any suggestions on this would be great.

    Thank you,

    Julianne

[Julianne Becker] “When I burned to DVD using Toast the DVD image gets much more degraded.”

    Julianne,

You’re probably using Toast, which is terribly inferior, simply because it’s easy. Right?

Meanwhile the great tools you have in FCS that would allow you to make very good DVDs are sitting idle, and here you are unhappy, and unable to make a good DVD from what is probably very good looking HD video. Is that right?

If I told you that using the tools in FCS was simple and that I would help you to do the job properly, would you take the time to learn to do it right?

I would appreciate it so much if you would be able to explain.
    Thank you!

Okay Julianne, here goes… We’ll do this in two parts…

    PART 1

1)Export a self-contained QT using Quicktime Export — current settings, which simply creates a file that exactly matches what is on timeline in the same resolution and format.

    2)Open Compressor

3)Drag the QT you just created the file from the Finder onto the big gray downward-pointing arrow on the upper left.

4)Now assign a setting by clicking on the setting tab (midway down far left in Compressor), click on the little black arrow to the left of the Apple folder, click on the arrow to the left of the DVD folder, select the folder that says DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes and simply drag that folder up to the gray bar that says “Drag Settings and Destinations Here.

5)Now assign a destination the same way. Click on the destination folder and drag one of the destinations, such as Desktop to the same gray bar above.

6)Now, select the bar up top that says MPE2 that was added when dragged in your DVD settings. That will open the Inspector window to your right, and there are two settings you need to change there. You will see six gray icons—click on the second one, which opens the Encoder controls. You will see four items there — Video Format needs to be changed to PAL and Aspect Ratio needs to be set to 16×9. To do those you first need to unlock them by clicking on the small black star. Changing Aspect Ratio to 16:9 will encode an MPEG2 properly so that you can create a DVD that will display 16×9 on a widescreen monitor and letterboxed on a 4×3 monitor.

7)Now hit the Submit button over on the middle right side. You are now encoding a MPEG2 video file with the extension .m2v and a separate audio file with the extension .ac3.

8)Now wait while the encoding takes place. When it’s done let me know and I’ll post part two, which is three simple steps in DVDSP.

    Good luck,
    David

Thank you so much again, I have never used compressor.

I have reached a halt though, when I pressed submit I got a message saying-
‘each target must have a setting and a destination’

More of a novice than I realized,

    Julianne

[Julianne Becker] “More of a novice than I realized,”

You know what they say… Give a woman a fish and feed her for a day, teach her to use Compressor and DVDSP and feed her for a lifetime…

[Julianne Becker] “when I pressed submit I got a message saying-
‘each target must have a setting and a destination'”

Sounds like you missed these two steps:

4)Now assign a setting by clicking on the setting tab (midway down far left in Compressor), click on the little black arrow to the left of the Apple folder, click on the arrow to the left of the DVD folder, select the folder that says DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes and simply drag that folder up to the gray bar that says “Drag Settings and Destinations Here.

5)Now assign a destination the same way. Click on the destination folder and drag one of the destinations, such as Desktop to the same gray bar above.

If you click on the help menu and open the Compressor manual and go to page 19 — Getting Started Quickly, it will give you pix and diagrams that will help…

    Julianne,

    I’m headed off to sleep… Here’s part 2, I know you can do it…

    David

    PART 2

    10)Open DVDSP

11)Click on the Graphical Tab about 4 inches from the left just under the menu bar — you will now see two little monitors, one blue, and one green. Select the blue one and hit delete.

12)Next, right click on the little green monitor and choose “first play.”

13)Now drag the two files you created with compressor, the .m2v and the .ac3 on top of the little green monitor.

    14) Next, click on the Outline tab, upper left under the menu bar and select the little disk icon that says Untitled-Disc. That will open an the Disc setting window over on the right, and under the General tab you will see a place to select SD DVD and PAL. Do that…

15)Now, the last step, click on the black and yellow button up top in the menu bar. You will be prompted to put a blank DVD in the burner. Do that and close the drawer. DVDSP will now complete the basic authoring process and burn the DVD for you, and it should be very good quality.

I can’t thank you enough for this step by step instruction. I realize now that I don’t have DVD SP, but my IT guy is assures me that I will have it by Monday. I’ll let you know how it all goes!!

    Thank you again!
