Pixelated before transition
Posted by Mike Hinkel on December 1, 2012 at 4:55 pmI am using VP12 and have come across a problem that I have not had before. When using third party transitions I get a heavy pixelazation as the transition hesitates before the transition itself. The footage is 1080p/60i. I have also noticed the same thing in normal crossfades with BBC8 effects applied to events. Any ideas of what may be happening here or just another bug with plugins not playing nice?

December 1, 2012 at 10:55 pmTry rendering the same thing with GPU acceleration turned off. Sometimes the GPU causes problems with transitions.

I think Sony needs to pony up and state unequivocally which video cards absolutely, positively work with SVP 11/12 with their CUDA implementation. I have seen many posts to rendering issues, of which the ‘fix’ is to disable GPU acceleration. From previous posts I know you have a work station grade video card, but not all of us are in the business full-time to install a component that can cost several thousand dollars, so we get a GTX570 or similar ‘gaming card’ which Sony says is compatible with Vegas and CUDA, but in reality is not. Sounds like a bit of false advertising.
John, please not that this is not a personal attack on you! It’s just frustrating as a consumer/hobby editor to try and do the right thing by buying gear that Sony says is compatible, only to learn later on that may not be the case.
This is almost like Windows 7 drivers: certified versus compatible. The former is guaranteed to work, the latter may or may not. I am wondering if the video cards and drivers tested by Sony fall into similar categories. Can we get such a definitive list from Sony?

I agree it would be better for Sony to come up with a list of supported cards that they test with like Adobe did. Adobe pretty much supports the entire Quadro series and then just the GeForce GTX 285, GTX 470, GTX 570, & GTX 580. Perhaps sticking with one of those cards would work well with Vegas Pro too.

December 2, 2012 at 2:12 amI’ll try that, John, Thanks. What puzzles me is not having the problem before and all of a sudden ….SURPRISE! For the life of I didn’t do anything different than what I have been.

December 2, 2012 at 3:33 amAs it turns out I had the GPU turned off for another issue I had in the past and never turned it back on. Turning it back on for this problem only made the transitions look 10 times worse….I am beginning to wonder why I even continue to battle this stuff. After all the expense and time to try to do it right only to have these gremlins kick you in the pants…..:^(

Yea, there is definitely more work to be done with GPU support and transitions. I don’t know what else to tell you except to contact Sony. They can’t fix problems that they don’t know about.

December 2, 2012 at 1:11 pmThanks John. I am going to contact Sony support on the issue. I just hope it doesn’t take 6 months of Sundays for a fix.

Does it make a difference if you set your project properties “Full-Resolution Rendering Quality” to Best?

December 2, 2012 at 11:23 pmThanks Mark. I didn’t try that. I have best full set before rendering, but it changes to good full. Can’t find where you change that so it stays on best.

Right-click the preview and uncheck the option Adjust Size and Quality for Optimal Playback. This is what changes your preview to keep the frame rate up but if you don’t like it you can disable it.
