    Hi all,
Just about to start on a low-budget feature on the EX1 and the look we’re going for is something of a cross between 3:10 to Yuma and O Brother Where Art Thou. Basically, tone down the greens, up the oranges and yellows, allow some foreground colors to pop while trying to mute the background as much as posible to give it a 1930s depression era look.

Should I try to dial in as near an approximation with my picture profiles or would it be better to go with a more basic PP (like the Vortex Media suggestions) and style in post?

The lighting team knows exactly what we’re shooting for and will do what they can with gels, but I don’t know how much of a “look” I should try to dial in with the picture profiles or what the settings would be if I go that route. Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Best,
    Michael

BTW, I’ll have access to a ridiculously nice post facility so render time isn’t a problem, but I’m definitely not a colorist and don’t have the $ to hire one.

adjust your picture profile to shoot a flat image, (mess iwith the gamma compression/knee) and then add your sepia look in post.

I’ve had very pleasing results doing this

Thanks Brian! I’ve spent the last couple hours on the picture profile recipes thread at DVinfo and am more confused than ever. Definitely just going to try to capture as much of the image as possible and then correct in post…Any chance you could post your settings for a flat image?

Alister Chapman has some good tutorials on EX Picture Profiles.

Thanks Craig! I actually stumbled across these tutorials earlier…will watch again…and then probably again ad infinitum or until by some miracle I “get it”.

Take the Factory Preset and low the Blacks a bit (-4).
You get a flat picture easy to manipulate in Color.

I thought that might be the best way…the standard settings just look so terrible to me…then again, so did the footage from O’ Brother before digital mastering. But do the factory settings with a -4 black bring the most possible data back for rendering?
