I’m doing a slideshow movie as an x-mas present and I’m getting stuck at this one part. I’ve taken pictures of all the kids in the family holding a plain white 8.5×11 sheet of paper. I want to make it appear as though the slideshow is taking place on these cards.

I have two .jpgs……jpg_1 is a picture of a kid holding a plain white sheet of paper.
Jpg_2 is just a plain still picture that I want to appear on the white sheet of paper on jpg_1.

I’m doing a slideshow movie and what I want to do is freeze jpg_2 as it takes up the entire screen…..and then slowly zoom out so that you have the illusion that the entire slideshow was happening on a card held by the kid in jpg_1.

The only way that I could get it to work was by doing the following:

Using event pan/crop resize jpg_2 so that it appears inside the white box on jpg_1 (which is on the track below jpg_2)…this is my last keyframe. For the starting keyframe I zoom all the way back in so that jpg_2 appears full-frame. Doing this zooming in and back out really pixelates the image.

Is there a better way to do this? I may not be explaining this very well….please let me know if you have any ideas.

    thanks in advance…

What is the reolution of the images that you are using?

Start out with both jpg full frame. Should be clear pictures. No pixilization. Then use pan crop on top jpg to reduce to size of and position of white card. You can run scene in reverse if you want it to go the other way, but start out with full size images.

    Thanks Terry…

I’ve done that. I can shrink the jpg down to fit on the white card without any problems. The problem is when I zoom back in to get the picture to take up the entire frame…it looks terrible. I think I’ve heard somewhere that Vegas re-samples images that are panned/cropped. So I’m wondering if the image is being re-sampled when it’s shrunk way down to fit on the card….and that’s the reason it looks so bad when I zoom back in on it.

Vegas uses the video resolution when using Track Motion. Pan/Crop will always use the full resolution of the image. I’m not complete following you but what exactly are you using Pan/Crop to enlarge? The original image? or somehow the image in the video clip? The original should come back sharp using Pan/Crop. Maybe if you posted a VEG file.

Thanks Ed. I’ve never posted a .veg before. I’ll read the forum instructions and try to post one tonight.

I think the problem here is that I’m trying to do this the hard way. I’m sure there’s an easier way to do it…I just don’t know what it is.

    Track1 is the full-frame picture (.jpg1)
Track2 is the picture of my son holding a plain white 8.5×11.

Using even pan/crop, I’m resizing .jpg1 so that it fits on the 8.5×11 my son is holding. I set this as a keyframe and set it to the end of the event…since this is how i want the final shot to look. I then right-click and select ‘restore’ to set my starting keyframe back to the original full-frame shot.

I want the shot to start with .jpg1 full-frame….then pulling all the way out to show that it is being “held” by my son. My current issue is that Track2 just sits still when I need it to start out zoomed way in and then zoom out with .jpg1. I don’t have a problem getting .jpg1 to do what I want…it’s getting the image on track2 to move with it that i’m having the issue with.

When I added the event to the timeline, if I want it to start full screen, I won’t mess with the first keyframe. Simply immediately add the second keyframe, adjust as needed, and you’d be done with no resets needed.

Let me see if I have this right…

    jpg 1 on track 1
    jpg 2 on track 2
jpg 2 is “background ” picture of someone holding white card

Video starts as full screen view of jpg 1.
You then ‘pull back’ thus exposing more and more of jpg 2 as jpg 1 receeds and stays centered on the white card.

At beginning and throughout entire video jpeg 1 stays clean.
But as jpg 2 becomes visible as you pull back it is pixillated but possibly gets clearer the more you ‘pull back’

You end up with jpg 2 filling screen with a small ‘pip’ of jpg 1 where the white card is and everything looks clean at that point.

And you are doing all this with only event pan and crop?

The first thing that comes to mind is that jpg 2 needs to be a lot higher resolution as you would be really zoomed in on it at first.

Thanks again guys. I played with it a little more last night and got it figured out. I was doing something stupid…I figured it was me.

    Thanks again for your help…
