Photshop files in Sony Vegas – no more transparency recognition?
In older versions of Sony Vegas I could import .PSD files into my timeline and Vegas would recognize transparency. Say if I cut a person out of a photo I could import the file and it would show the photo with a hole where the person used to be. Very similar to a mask. But the new versions – 10 and up – don’t seem to allow this. When I import the file all I get is a white solid.
Is this something other people have experienced? It was one of my favorite features because I could stack layers with different images and do cool motion graphics.

I figured it out: .PNG and .GIF will preserve the layer transparency. I wonder if Adobe took that feature out of .PSD on purpose.

Really? I’ve always had to activate the ALPHA channel by going into Media Properties and selecting Premultiplied. Maybe John can give the history better than I.

Transparency is still automatically preserved when a psd file is
imported into Vegas, nor is there any need to change its alpha channel
in media properties.Which version of Photoshop are you using? Im also assuming you are saving
your psd files in the CMYK Color Mode, that also will cause the problem
you are currently having in Vegas, save them in the RGB Color Mode instead and you should be ok.Steve Rhoden (Cow Leader)

Thanks for responding. I’m using Photoshop CC 2014 and Vegas 11. I saved in both RGB and CMYK and ran into the same issue – white solid.

Not sure then what else could be wrong, Vegas 12 and 13 does not
have that issue. Ive never used Vegas 11 any at all, cause it was

I use the feature you’re describing quite a bit, and I’ve never had any problem with it, in Vegas 11, 12, or 13. I just tried creating a .PSD file in Photoshop CC 2014 and when I imported it into Vegas 13 the transparency was preserved. Like I said, I’ve also done this extensively in previous versions of Vegas and Photoshop.
So, although I don’t know why you’re having the problem, at least I can tell you that the problem is not common to all users.

Brian, thanks for your clarity. And based on your firm assertion I went back to creating a PSD, and found I needed to include a BACKGROUND Layer, and using the previous original Media that DIDN’T hold the Transparency, it now does.
