Photoshop sometimes doesn’t work
Posted by Bobby Hall on May 15, 2016 at 9:11 amSometimes Photoshop works perfectly for me and other times nothing works at all. It’s like it’s deciding to not let me use any of the features. Does anyone have any idea why it’s doing this and what the solution could be? My computer is a 64-bit Sony Vaio with Windows 10. Also, I have both Photoshop CS6 and CC and both of them behave this way. Thanks for any help!

May 16, 2016 at 12:56 pmWhen Photoshop works open the system task manager and look at the Processes tab and the Performance tab.
Take a screen shot of those tabs and store them for later.
When Photoshopis not working repeat this process of going into the task manager, taking screen shots and storing them.
Compare the screen shots. How do they differn in terms of processes listed and the system loads involved. Are any other processes getting in the way? or taking system resources.
Also get familiar with system logging. Not just errors but system events.
With these methods you can track down for yourself what may be interfering with Photoshop.
Also when was the last time you used a system utility such as PCTuneup to clean your registry, fix broken shortcuts, clear out old cache data etc?
A broken shortcut on the desktop after an update might be the only problem.
If Photoshop does not start from an icon or the start menu did you ever open the Adobe applications folder and click the Photoshop.exe file?
If you are on Creative Cloud and none of the above work for you a call to support will help. but fixing it yourself will feel good and teach you more.
Also make note of the time and day when Photoshop does not work. Is there other hard drive activity going on? Do you have a scheduled update or defrag going on or an antivirus/malware scan? You could investigae your system settings and your internet suite settings to find out more.

May 16, 2016 at 2:52 pmDo you mean some of the menu options are grayed out? If so, if could be as simple as having the image in such a color mode that those options are not available (8-bit RGB has most options, 16-bit RGB has less options, as does CMYK images, indexed color has less and pure black and white bitmap even fewer).
Or is nothing working whatsoever?

May 16, 2016 at 10:23 pmSometimes when I open a photo to edit, I’ll add a new layer and try to do any type of re-touching (like using the patch tool or healing brush), and it’ll give me an error message saying no pixels are selected.
Other times it works fine though. So it can’t be something I’m forgetting to do because I’m doing the exact same things.

You are still working with the “new layer” activated.
Activate the layer you want to select from..

May 17, 2016 at 5:49 amI’m doing skin retouching in a picture and I have a texture layer and a blemish layer underneath that. The first time I fix the blemishes it works fine. And then I’ll edit something else in a separate group, and then decide I want to go back and remove some blemishes that I missed, but when I go back into the blemish layer it won’t let me use some of the tools that I was able to use before. Anyone know why this is?

May 17, 2016 at 7:29 amApologies if this is too obvious but you mention it is an error that occurs after you add a new layer. Is there anything in the new layer? The patch tool and the healing brush generally won’t do anything if the layer is blank as new layers are by default. If ythe layer is blank but you want to use the healing brush anyway you have to make sure you have the “sample all layers” button ticked.
