When I bring in my photoshop files into FCP, some of the effects that I add to individual layers don’t come in. I know that the solution is to flatten the image, but I am animating each layer in FCP. Is there a way to bring in the psd files so that the effects come along?

You need to merge down each layer with the effect. All Layer Effects in Photoshop do not leave the application. So create a blank layer below each layer and merge the layer down. This flattens the layer with the effect.

If you have Photoshop CS2 you can actually “Create Smart Object” for each layer which essentially flattens each layer, but you can still edit the layers individually if you have to. that’s extremely cool and this is what I do now.

Smart Objects, eh? I’m gonna have to look into that.

Layer > Smart Object > Group into Smart Object

Found it by accident when I first started using CS2. Incredible timesaver for me as most of our episodes have at least 47 graphics or so and I build them all in one Photoshop file. Each layer uses the Outer Glow Layer Effect and Smart Objects marries the layer effect to the layer, but the layer is still Text editable.

TIFFs are pretty cool too if you don’t need to animate layers. It comes into FCP as a single layer with the alpha intact. However, when you open in Editor all the layers remain intact, so you can edit them. Got that from Richard Harrington. Hey Rich!

I don’t need to animate the layers, but I do need all the layers intact and not merged. So Smart Objects works really well for keeping the layers intact.
