I don’t think changing codec is going to change this bloated file size bug though. I’d be tempted to make a new project, open up the bin for the new project and drag all the files and timelines from the old project across to the new one, and then save that, and see if the project size shrinks back to normal.

i’ve been thinking about that. isn’t that something that could easily be hacked? seems like it would just be a flag somewhere, or is it a real limitation in the software? i guess the 35% could be because above that the codec switches from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 or something, but the frame size? surely that’s only a matter of the processor speed.

I tried to hack it, and failed. Perhaps writing a custom RT enabler might do it. They’re all written in what looks lik fxscript, but with commands that are totally undocumented. I wonder if our friends at BMD or the people qho do the DC30 codec and MPEG Streamclip could give us some pointers.

wow, i didn’t know about the dc30 codec. since it works as transcoding codec too without a dc30 installed why do we need pjpg? this will from now on be my offline codec of choice. i think i even have an old dc30 in a pc somewhere that i could try to install…

Their codec is just a PhotoJPEG, but their own version. It works well with or without the card. I’d like to see standard PhotoJPEG work though, or interoperability reasons.

What is this dc30 codec all about?? Is it a 4:2:2? Does it stack up to 8-bit uncompressed? How does it work with Kona SD?

holy shit, it does. all you have to do is intall the dc30 codec, enter the effects handling tab in system preferences and change from fcp to squared 5 next to pjpg. after this realtime effects are enabled for any frame size and compression even for pjpg. fantastic.

AH. That’s nice. I emailed the guys at Squared5, and hopefully they’ll get back with another solution for us, if indeed it’s possible.
