Performing a swap edit whilst keeping other tracks in sync

lock the tracks you don’t need and drop your clip into place. F4 will lock all video tracks, f5 all audio. Clicking the little locks to the left of the tracks will lock/unlock just that track.

f9 will insert the clip from your viewer to your timeline at the timeline in point or the playhead, in that order of preference, using the clip’s in/out points. This will push all clips behind it down the line. and locked tracks will not be affected.

f10 will overwrite the clip onto the timeline, without pushing anything down the line. all locked tracks will be unaffected.

f11 will replace the clip on the timeline with the clip in the viewer, using the viewer’s in point, and the timeline clip’s out point for correct length.

For both those functions, if you have your audio tracks locked the existing audio will not be affected (and vice versa for video.

If you are dragging clips from the bin/viewer to the timeline, if the arrow is pointing right, it will insert. If the arrow is pointing down it will overwrite. depending on where the cursor is in relation to the height of the track will cause the switch between the two functions. you can cycle through the different track heights by clicking on the little bar graph in the bottom left corner of the timeline. (I use the g button to do this, but I think I had to map that myself).

I’ve already got my clips in my sequence, I just want to rejig the order of them. If I lock the tracks then surely it’s not going to preserve my sync on V2 etc?

Try using the ripple cut function Shift-X with paste insert Shift-V.

Another way is to select the clip you want to swap, hold down the option key and drag the selected clip over to any edit point you want to insert the clip into. You should see a little curved down arrow. Once the clip looks like it’s going to snap into position, release the clip – it should lock in leaving all other clips in sequence.

Actually – that’s a pretty poor explanation. This video does a much better job…
