    Hello all,
    My facility is in the middle of our first edit using Premiere. The project we’re working on is a music video incorporating footage from 5D, 7D, Filmcam, and GoPro, which we understood could be used in Premiere without transcoding.
    Problem is that we’re experiencing some major performance issues:
    -when you click out of Premiere (to check email for instance) and then click back into Premiere, there’s a 20 second spinning wheel
    -general lag when loading/viewing clips
    -playback issues when playing the timeline

    I was convinced that the issue was with the footage given that H.264 and mpeg4 are difficult formats to work with. However we did a test where we transcoded all of the footage to ProRes(LT), imported that footage into a new project, and we still experienced the same performance issues. Any insight into why we’re experiencing these issues or suggestions on how to get better performance? Our facility is a long time FCP house and admittedly we don’t know all of the in’s and out’s of Premiere so any help would be appreciated.

    Mac Pro, 2x 2.26 GHz, 6GB RAM
    OSX 10.6.7
    Premiere CS5

    Todd,
    Thanks for the response. I read your suggestions on the linked thread. I changed my “ram for other applications” to 5GB, leaving 11GB for Premiere. I ran an update on Premiere but it only went to 5.0.4. Premiere 5.5 is a paid upgrade and I’d rather not spend more money until I try other solutions.

    I have all scratch discs and cashes going to an internal raid with plenty of storage. The media I’m working with is all Prores LT. I find it hard to believe that I’m having these performance issues. I literally have the same project set up in Premiere 5 and FCP7 and the performance between the two programs is incomparable!

    Is there anything else that I may be overlooking? Just curious, is this issue expected? Can Premiere handle large projects like features?
