  • perfect audio sync, not just snap to frame, anyone know?

    Hi there,

apologies if this is common knowledge but i’ve been trying to get my auido to sync perfectly and it keeps snapping to the closest frame.

I thought changing the time base on the timeline would allow me but alas it does not.

anyone know how to sync audio more accurately than snapping it to the nearest frame?

    thanks again.

you could work in a comp with a higher frame rate. in ae you can specify a frame rate up to 99 fps.

for rendering (assuming you need to get this back to a standard frame rate) just drop that comp into a standard frame rate comp.

Hmm. Yes. If I’m cutting audio, I go to an audio editing app, where I can really nail it.

I think that AE coders assumed that if you’re keyframing to a medium (video) that only resolves to frames, then sub-frame resolution would not be necessary.

Regarding Kevin’s solution, once you render back to the original frame rate, wouldn’t it look the same as when you were working in the original frame rate comp?

For example, if you want something to appear on frame 2.5 at 30fps, you go into a 60 fps comp and place it at frame 5. Now when you render that comp at 30fps, the thing will appear at frame 3…. the same result as if you snapped to frame 3 in a 30 fps comp. Try it.

The limit is the temporal resolution of the final render. Unless I’m missing something …

I’m surprised you can’t do this despite After Fx being notorious for being bad at handling audio.

Thanks for the work around tips with using higher frame rates, very resourceful. I have 40 x 2min clips and have guide audio so can sync up the proper audio to. I wanted to sync by eye on the waveforms but alas can’t get close to it unless I’m lucky.

I guess I have to mark the audio start time and trim all the new audio files in Soundtrack pro and then re-import them to After Effects. what a pain.

    thanks for the tips guys.
