PCI HBA or new mobo?
I’m putting together a SAN (MetaSan) and I just made an unfortunate discovery. It seems one of the machines I’d like to add to the SAN only has 33Mhz PCI slots and doesn’t have any PCI-X slots. I built the machine as a stand-alone ProCoder station and didn’t anticipate connecting it to a SAN so I didn’t pay any attention to the I/O slots. The HBAs that I have (QLogic QLA2340) are, of course, PCI-X. Are there PCI HBAs out there or am I better off replacing the motherboard (Tyan Tiger K8W) with a similar motherboard with PCI-X slots (Tyan Thunder K8WE) at a cost of just over $400? I’ve got a couple of G5 FCP workstations that will likely be added within the year so the PCI-X HBA wouldn’t go to waste if I were to replace it on this machine.
