PC Monitors on Mac?
My two 20″ Apple Cinema Displays need replaced on my MacPro. I have the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT and it has Dual DVI outputs. The new 24″ cinema display requires MiniDisplay Port output and I do not want to buy the $150 adapters with the new 24″ apple monitors.
I was wondering if anyone had experience or knew if buying 24″ Dell Ultra-sharps or a similar display to go with my MacPro would be an adequate solution? If not what are the cons? Also, any other monitor recommendations?
Because of my job the quality of the monitor is extremely important in my case.

The biggest distinction I’ve seen between cheaper monitors and higher end models like the Apples is the LCD panel type; for graphics, you want an IPS panel.
Some of the Dells are IPS, and some are not. One I’ve heard highly regarded is the Dell U2410. The higher-end HP displays are great too; I’m running older HP 2335 screens but the HP LP2475W is supposed to be excellent.

I edit with a “Broadcast monitor” and use that to see if everything looks the way it should. Because of that I don’t use Apple computer monitors on my Mac. I use duel computer monitors I got at Costco and it has worked out great for me. If you don’t have a broadcast monitor I highly recommend it.

I do have a broadcast monitor and that works great but I want the resolution and color accuracy for other things such as graphic design. Some of my work spans out from the broadcast realm so it’s important I have the quality monitors.
Micah I will look into the HP monitors as well as the Dell you spoke about. Are you working on an Apple?

if you have the budget for it, consider a 10 bit workflow monitor,(10 bit 3d card, 10 bit software(photoshop CS5) It’s excessive for some people, but if you work with highly detailed gradients and large color spaces (Adobe 1998 or higher) it makes a difference. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, don’t waste the extra money, lol.

I have made the decision to go with two HP LP2475W’s. I like what I have read about these monitors and think they will do the trick for less cost than the Apple Displays.

I recently purchased a pair of HP zr24w IPS monitors from Amazon for around $400 each for our Art department (Macs) and also a pair for at home (PC). They look great! The colors are fantastic. And a great price for IPS monitors.

Just wanted to comment in support of the HP IPS monitors.
I recently managed to put aside the cash for an HP zr30w IPS monitor, and I have to say that I’ll never go back. Beautiful, flawless, and very, very large.
IPS displays are expensive for their size class, but my own personal take is that your monitor is a good place to not skimp on quality if you afford it.
