Hi, I was using the built in “particle playground” that came with AE and decided to try Trapcode Particular because the results seemed so much more interesting…however, I’ve run into a problem, my entire composition is very very 2D – and the main aspect I liked about the ‘particle playground’ was this 2d “look” (ie. particles never flew off into z-space). I find with Particular, even though I can achieve the particles I like, now I cannot seem to just have a ‘flat’ camera. Is there anyway to control the particles so they are only in x/y space?

PS: This also goes for the emiter (which I animate moving around). It seems the emitter is also in 3d space and afixed to some ‘camera’.

Well, if your comp is 2D then you probably don’t have a camera in there, so that’s a start.

The second thing you would need to do is make sure that if you’re using a box/sphere emitter that it’s Z-depth is 0.

The third thing is to use a non-uniform direction for your emitter (uniform sends particles flying out in all directions, including Z-space) and set the spread to 0% and the velocity randomness to 0%.

Then make sure your emitter isn’t pointing into Z-space and you should be good to go.

Obviously, having only 2 dimensions for your particles to exist in will limit what you can do with them.
