Particle Illusion Problem
Posted by Joao Souza on February 25, 2015 at 6:16 amThere are some emitters like fire with smoke, it doesn’t matter what I do it always looks crap when I import it to Vegas, smoke looks really dark and like a solid spot and not like smoke with soft edges that blend with the background image or video.
I’m “save output” PNG file, save alpha and remove black bg.
While playing on a background image, it looks perfect but when I import it to Vegas(without that background) and put over the same background it looks the way I explained above.
How to fix that?

February 25, 2015 at 8:38 amBecause I want no background and everybody I know who works with PI told me PNG would give me the best results, are they wrong?
BTW when I try to save to AVI like you, that output options box doesn’t let me change anything, all settings are locked, is there a way to unlock them?We have so much time and so little to do! / Willy Wonka

February 25, 2015 at 9:01 amAre they wrong? – I wouldn’t say that, but you end up with a collection of stills. I couldn’t work like that. From your “response”, it would appear you aren’t aware that PNG isn’t the only Render-out option that keeps the ALPHA channel?
And to quality, I’m getting 1920×1080.

If I try to save to AVI, I can’t check save alpha channel box or any other box, they’re all locked.

February 25, 2015 at 9:38 amAs AVI render settings are locked, I tried something different,as I couldn’t choose save alpha channel, I exported with black background and in Vegas I changed channel composite mode to screen, it worked.
Why the hell AVI output settings are locked? We have so much time and so little to do! / Willy Wonka

You need an AVI CODEC option that WILL support ALPHA and then render the ALPHA Channel.

February 25, 2015 at 10:33 amPlease tell me one.
I installed Lagarith but even when choosing it still avi options are locked.
I installed Huffyuv too but still settings are locked, choosing codec is a screen after AVI output settings so it’s locked before I choose any codec so I can’t go to the second screen and choose a codec then return to the output options and see if settings are unlocked.

February 25, 2015 at 3:34 pmWhat software are you using to separate the smoke from the background? My suspicion is that your separation is not as good as you think it is. The imperfections are hidden by the black background. You are probably seeing the true selection in Vegas. It probably does not look as good because the original black background is no longer present.

What did you set the Alpha Channel to on the Event on the Timeline? If you used Straight (unmated), try Pre-multiplied (Black).
