Partial-frame still image sequences in Vegas Pro 9…is it possible?

What I have in mind seems pretty simple, IF it can be done with the standard Vegas Pro 9 tool set. In a nutshell, I want to:
1. Create a black background for the video frame.
2. Slice a still image into horizontal ‘Image Ribbons’ (done manually in Photoshop). Imagine ten Ribbon Images with #1 at the top and #10 at the bottom.
3. Display Ribbon Image #1 briefly–in place–at the top of the video frame.
4. As Ribbon #1 fades to black, display Ribbon #2–in place–just below Ribbon #1. And so on, through Ribbon #10.
Alternatively, would it be easier to use the entire image in place, and somehow mask off all of it except for each currently exposed ribbon image.
Thanks for any guidance on this. I’m hoping I won’t need After Effects or similar, because there’s no budget for that…

Yes it can be done in Vegas Pro 9.0. If you prepare your 10 images in Photoshop using the full size of your project frame for each, then all you need to do is drop the 10 images on a track and add crossfades between them. In other words, in Photoshop, place ribbon #1 in a 1920×1080 image. Then place ribbon #2 in the proper position in a 1920×1080 image. etc. for each ribbon. Export them all as PNG files so that they retain their transparency.
You could also just use the Mask tool in Pan/Crop and not need Photoshop.

Thanks a LOT for focusing my thinking on this. I’ve had Vegas 9 for quite some time, but mostly it’s just been taking up space on my System drive (duh).
The triple image below is my understanding of your instructions as they pertain to Photoshop. Please correct me if I’m wrong. And I’ll be sure to study the Pan/Crop Mask Tool in Vegas Pro 9 as you mentioned.
Per your excellent instructions, I now have a direction for how to approach this. Once I get my feet wet, something else may occur to me (it usually does…after I’m about 90% finished, ha!) but you’ve given me an excellent starting point.
BEAT MAPPING
Several years ago you showed me EXACTLY how to adjust Sony Acid Pro tempo, measure-by-measure, to match existing .wav file content that was not recorded to a click track. I was stunned: a) that such a thing could be done at all, and b) that you were so amazingly generous with your time and expertise.Well here we are again, and I have the same reaction, TIMES TWO!
