  • panning a large (long) illustrator file in AE with camera

I am struggling with something I am sure is easy, i am just stuck. I created a row of buildings in Illustrator, the file is 2880 x 960. I want to bring that into AE and simply pan from the left side to the right side over 20 seconds or so. I made a comp the same size as the illustrator file and imported the Ill file into it, but that doesn’t give me a 720 x 480 screen size. Do i need to pre comp the illustrator file or just make a 720 x 480 file and move the Illustrator image around in the comp window. My original idea was to bring in a big comp and place a null in it and just have the caera follow it, but that will not give my a standard 720 x 480 result. I am lost, please help or give me some direction.

Make a new comp the siz you want it to be (720×480).

Import the AI file and place it on the time line. Then animate it’s position, scale or what ever you need. You could make it a 3d layer and then animate a camera as well.

Like Shayder says, you only need to change the layer’s position keyframes on the x axis.

The only reason to use your AI file as a 3D layer is if you have another layer on top or below it that interacts with shadows or other illusions of depth. It could be a great comp in 3D but you need to think it through first.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
