  • Panasonic Varicam flagged frames adoption by Avid?

Posted by Tim Maloney on June 8, 2005 at 12:27 am

    Hello all,

As a Panasonic Varicam owner, I need to know what Avid products can operate using the flagged frames of over/undercrank material generated by the camera.

    Preferably uncompressed.

As Avid owners are unlikely to move to FCP where the adoption is a done deal, I want to be able to quote with knowledge where it can happen and where not.

Its a little expensive and boring dubbing pristine HD pictures back to Digi beta just to accomodate the Legacy AVID set up’s in here in Melbourne Australia.

    Thanks

    Tim –

Support for flags in the Varicam is scheduled for the Q4 release but will work when capturing native DVCPRO100 over FireWire. What project type would you most likely be using the flagged frames? In SD?

    Micheal,

Not so much me as I am set up with FCP 5.

Its more about our camera rental clients who have large downconvert/duplication costs to get to the ingest point with their Avids.

I should be able to rent them the 1200a deck and away they go! The code made available free by Panasonic has been around for two years now.

In Q4 will that be Express HD only? retrofitable, expensive?

    Thank you

It will be a software upgrade to the Xpress Pro and MC Adrenaline prodcuts. THe difference will be that it can be done on the fly during capture eliminating the extra time and space to create the files.

    Thanks Michael,

Your response is more than I got any where here.

I am unfamiliar with those product line.

Do any of them see HDSDI?

    Regards

    Tim

Xpress Pro HD used direct capture over Firwire for DV25, DV50 and DVCPRO 100. By adding the Mojo hardware you get support for Standard Definition video via composite, s-video or component.

Media Composer Adrenaline HD, Symphony Nitris, and DS Nitris all have HD-SDI connections.

The flags in varicam will only be supported when the DVCPRO is captured natively over FireWire (Xpress Pro and Media Composer Adrenaline HD).
