  • Panasonic recorder will not play Blu ray discs created in Sony Vegas

Posted by Peter Brown on October 9, 2013 at 1:25 am

I have just purchased a new Panasonic recorder DMR-BWT850.
I also own the previous model the DMR_BWT800.
The previous recorder played all my Vegas created Blu-ray discs perfectly as does almost every other recorder I have tried them in.
However I was shocked to find the new recorder will not play vegas recorder Blu-ray discs , it will play vegas created DVDs fine.
I returned to the shop where I purchased the recorder and tried my discs it in another recorder the same as mine just to check there was not a problem with my unit but unfortunately the result was just the same ..it would not play.
However I tried the Blu ray disc in lots of other recorders and players and it worked fine.
I contacted Panasonic Australia and the response I got was ” we do not guarantee to play other manufacturers discs
I also tried recording on a different make of disc but it still would not play,
I always use Verbatim BD-R & BD-RE the new recorder does work fine with these discs when recorder on the recorder itself
I have forwarded a disc to Panasonic Australia and asked if they could make a firmware update so I will wait for a response !
I cannot believe that a company like Panasonic would intentionally make a retograde step such as this,
I would advise everyone NOT to buy one of these recorders until Panasonic sorts the problem out

It may not be a “retrograde step”, but a tightening of the specs. How are you writing the DB disc?

    Hello Stephen
I am writing the discs as I always do that is I create the content with Sony Vegas (properties set for Blu ray 1920×1080 50i)
( these settings are using Vegas “Match properties” icon.
    .
I then create the Blu ray disc and menu in DVD architect with the same settings.

There cannot be anything wrong with these settings as they play in ALL the other recorders and players I have tried and of course in the very similar previous Panasonic model ?

I think it’s key for you to explain to Panasonic that the discs work in their older player and that the new player is “broken” and they need to fix it. Compatibility is a major problem with Blu-ray and we have even bought Hollywood Blu-ray discs that don’t play in our Samsung player. We usually avoid Blu-ray in my house and just buy DVD’s. It’s just not worth the hassle. Good luck with Panasonic.

But, how do you burn the discs? I never, ever burn any plastic at the maximum burn speed – it almost guarantees incompatibility. If you use the DVD burner in your PC, you can control the burn speed. I have only used a stand-alone BD Recorder in a live TV studio, and all you can control there is select SP, LP and EP, just like the older VHS recorders. As with the VHS recorders, use EP at your own risk.

Also, it’s quite likely that the components in the Panasonic recorder are made by another company. When I said that it may be a more strict adherence to the BD spec, realize that the BD spec has no provision for burned discs.

Will the player play discs recorded on it? I doubt that Panasonic will be interested in your issue if it does.

    Thanks for your reply John.
I was surprised to see you prefer DVDs ?
Higher resolution Blu ray is certainly a better picture especially for the larger screens now on the market,
    ….No No No …don’t even mention 4K !

You are of course quite correct in saying the “key” is the discs work in their other models it will be interesting to see Panasonic’s reply
    Thanks

    Hello again Stephen
The discs are burned at the lowest speed.
On BD-RE that is 2x or BD-R 4x so there’s no problem there,
The “Key” as mentioned in John Rofano reply is that the discs work in older Panasonics and “other ” manufacturers players.

You know, it really depends on the program content. I have some of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies on DVD and others on Blu-ray, and I really can’t tell the difference between them and I think it’s because the movies are so over-processed when they color grade them that all the details are lost. I have an old 50″ Sony DLP HD TV so maybe the projection component isn’t giving me enough quality to really see the difference?

But, how do you burn the discs? On the Panasonic or on an internal BD writer?

I am having exactly the same problem with my Panasonic external player.
Blu Rays authored with Sony DVD Architect burnt with DVD Architect onto BD-R discs and hey presto…………nothing. “The disc is incompatible” It plays fine in the LG burner with Cyberlink Blu Ray suite. All the menus are fine. Why are we still having these compatibility issues after all this time? Very frustrating.

    Hi
Just to let you know what I eventually did.
I sent one of my Blu ray burned discs to Panasonic support and they claimed it played fine for them.!.
I could not believe this as I had previously tried it in the same Panasonic model it 2 different stores and it did not work

To solve the problem I went back to the retailer who was very helpful and allowed me to change the Panasonic for a recorder manufactured by someone else (Samsung)
It is not as good a recorder as the Panasonic and is more difficult to use but it does play ALL my Blu ray discs !,
