Regarding authenticity and accountability, I could not agree with you more. It is one of the reasons that we can and do close accounts here. When someone wishes to hide behind anonymity and make brash prognostications and such — usually while slamming the opinion of others — that is often a recipe for “account suicide” here at the Cow. This, as we can and do close acounts.

We have no problem with people having opinions but we like them to also own their own words and we have seen some people over the years who will register under six accounts and become their own fan club cheering themselves on as they rant. We watch for stuff like that and regularly close the accounts of those who do that.

We want people to feel that they are getting good information at the Cow. Maybe not perfect information or bias-free information but good information, at least. It’s tough to guarantee everything. ;o)

Like you, we’d love to have new forums for different cameas, etc., but until users step up to volunteer to host these forums, we rarely launch forums without leaders. We find that leader-free usually goes hand-in-hand with traffic-free, as well. ;o)

    Best regards,

    Ron Lindeboom

I have had some of my most rewarding equipment expereces at B&H!

About that 95%, I think I can add another detail. Long ago I was introduced to what I came to call a religious war which when understood helped to clarify all arguments about the a spacific subject, 16mm film cameras.

Indy film was not even a word yet something was happening when two companies offered compeating cameras for a growing number of film productions in both doc and narrative. Arri and Atton, what a boring fight, my guy won by the way!

This past experece was a valuabe one for understanding and dealing with this public web opinion stuff. As you might know Arri and Atton was pre Sony Panasonic, that war rages now and lets not forget Cannon. People take sides, people respond to these cameras and companies base on looks, advertising etc its like some kind of religious war.

My point is simple, many many many times I have read someting which seems off or just plane stupid and wrong and I remind myself of the war that is going on and I understand that what I have just read is junk and has nothing to do with hands on experice its all to do with Coke or Pepsi. People actualy seem to want to kill you if you say anything good about Sony or bad about Panasonic. They actualy go to forums thay hate and spout junk which is anti the products that might be the subject on that forum, WHAT A WAIST OF TIME!

So Arri and Atton are still at it they just have different names, I like the competition which makes things better for us and no snot nosed kid who thinks he can draw some blood is going to stop me from culling the wheat from the chafe.

Just to continue the speculations, 35Mbps interframe compression should give higher picture quality than 40Mbps intraframe compression. What happens beyond 24p is a different thing. If xdcamhd maintains 35Mbps, but dvcprohd increases datarate to 100Mbps, then the latter one should be better with higher framerates.

True progressive compression should also give better efficiency to the compression.
(Both sony and panny uses interlaced recording for progressive images in some cases.)

The rest (and usually more important part) is about camera head…

    Jan,

I’m only beating the dying horse here because you below comment left the door open a bit. If only for feed back…

“At this time the camera is switchable between 1080i and 720P, 60i/60P. It does not look like there is 24P or variable frame rates on its product plan at this time.”

I would be absolutely happy with this camera (on paper) if it shot 30p. It creates a look many video only clients are inteeseted in that don’t need or want the 24p effect.

It’s a bit of a buz kill holding these out. Especially since its 1/3″ HVX younger brother can do them and do some specialized variable frame rates as well.

Its already a risk for an independent to move into P2 and to not give us the standard features set we’re used to and have created business around… The whole thing becomes that much harder to try to buy into.

[Walter Graff] “Let’s not spread any rumors without fact. Have you seen XDCAM in action. To speak authentically would mean yo have used it and know it artifacts, etc. If not then all you are doing is creating rumor. “

I’d have to disagree Walter. If it’s using MPEG2 like HDV then that is all that many of us need to know…

I have used XDcam (not XDCamHD) for a network show and was mighty impressed. I did not know it was running vie MPEG2 compression and was happy as a clam. When I realized it was MPEG2 (I looked at the browser window) I was shocked, I tell you shocked!

Did I mention I was impressed? I have seen the HDV stuff and I have issues with it, I , like so many others have concluded that a major issue with HDV is the MPEG2 compression, and the long GOP thing. These issues do not present themselves with the XDcam format.

I would love to see the HD version of XDcam. I have heard from a person who buys all the video/sound equipment for a national network that the quality is fantastic, but I have not seen it and will not assume anything about it until I do, perhaps at B&H.

Just make sure that before you make an authoritative statement, that you have used a product in question or your statement doesn’t mean much.

[Walter Graff] “Just make sure that before you make an authoritative statement, that you have used a product in question or your statement doesn’t mean much.”

I think Ron already covered the part about while you have considerable knowledge, there are others who also do… though I’m not sure you’d agree. I wise man avoids trying to dictate parameters under which he will “appear to be objective”.

Having said that, regardless of how it does or doesn’t look, some of us will not use MPEG2 based products for a variety of reasons. The fact that you will is fine, and I and others would not attempt to get you to change your mind. Enjoy it Walter… it sounds like it works for you in your chesen environment…

So teach me something? What have you found using XDCAM that is objectionable with editing?

It’s MPEG2, but not like HDV – it is VBR rather than CBR and has a max of 35mb/s rather than a constant 25mb/s. However it used uncompressed audio, so I don’t know if that impacts on the 35mb/s bit rate or not.

That said, if you don’t like long GOP acquisition formats, XDCAM HD is not for you.
