Panasonic AJ-HD1200A to DSR25 down convert
Posted by Dw on April 19, 2006 at 5:56 pmMy producer just got this Panasonic deck to do down converts from DVCPRO to miniDV on the DSR25 but I can’t figure out how to properly patch these decks. I have yet to get deck control on the DSR25 in dupe mode. The Panasonic has both the 1394 and HD/SDI boards on back. Any wisdom out there for a confused assistant editor?
Happy to provide more details – just let me know. Thanks in advance.

April 19, 2006 at 6:41 pmI’m not sure if DSR25 has timecode input port on it. How are you going to jam the time-code so it correponds accurately with the camera original tape?

The deck should feed TC out via Firewire so you should be able to connect the two decks, set the 25 for External TC input, hit Play first on the 1200A and then hit REC on the 25.
If the 25 doesn’t accept external TC, then I’m not sure how you could do the dub and match TC. I’ve never used that machine so I’m not sure. The 1200A feeds TC both via Firewire and through a dedicated TC out spigot on the back.

April 19, 2006 at 8:01 pmMy plan was to jam it thru firewire, like Walter suggested but I get no feed at all into the DSR25; no pic, audio and of course no TC. I thought for sure that the firewire would do it. There’s no TC input port on the Sony but I thought the TC would go thru firewire. Can’t even get pic yet.

Sounds like the deck is not configured to downconvert the HD signal. You need to manually configure the 720 or 1080i to downconvert to SD on the Firewire feed. The only feed that does this automatically is the SD-SDI output.
Look at the Video Menus and switch the 720p to output at 480. The 25 won’t see the signal if it’s an HD signal.

April 19, 2006 at 8:09 pmThanks Walter – yeah, my first attempt was jamming it thru the firewire bc I know that TC will carry thru on DI connection. Sadly I get nothing – pic, audio nor TC. Next I tried with the DUP method on the DSR25 which, in theory with other decks, allows for deck control but not with this Panasonic. What makes all this worse is that the production company purchased this deck from my suggestion for this very function and now I can’t make it work. Can you say $32,000 mistake. I’m dying here.

read my last post. you have not configure the menus correctly. can you say “read the manual?”

April 19, 2006 at 8:18 pmYes, I’m working my way thru the 50 pages of menu setting for this deck. I’ve already changes the HD to SD on all the applicable settings but I’m still not there yet.

I’m pretty sure it’s in the 800’s somewhere. Maybe 891, 894, 895. something along there sounds familiar.

April 19, 2006 at 8:42 pm894 was my guess set to 0002 but no go. actually it’s a no go on any of these 894 895 896 settings – I think I’ve worked all the combinations.
thanks for your help.

April 19, 2006 at 9:07 pmHave you been powering down the deck after you make the changes? Some of the changes require a power cycle for them to take, and I think the 800’s feature some of those menus.
