PAL/24TRK to NTSC/5.1 workflow question
I have a broadcast quality PAL DigiBeta with a musical performance and a hard drive with a multitrack recording (24 discreete wav files) of the same performance. I need to end up with a broadcast quality NTSC DigiBeta and a professionaly compressed DVD with a 5.1 track.
The performace needs to be trimmed but there won’t be any critical sound editing involved – just losing excesive applause etc. Nevertheles some cuts will have to be made.
The video part I don’t have a problem with: capture uncompressed, trim, output back to PAL DB, convert with Alchemist to NTSC. The sound though is a bit confusing. The 5.1 track will be created at the studio across the country. Should I edit all the 24 tracks, export back to wav files and send those for them to work with? I suppose if they send me back the stereo mix and an ac3 file I could relay the first to tracks 1&2 and the second to 3&4? How does one relay ac3 track – it’s just noise if you listen to it, right? They’re asking about the format they should deliver the mix in and whether they should maintain the TC and deliver the mix with TC (wouldn’t it have to be on a DAT in that case?)
To make things more complicated there are .trk files on the drive. They obviously contain information about the related sound files but I’m not sure whether they’re needed at all. How will that information change if I edit the wav’s?
Do you have any suggestions?
