I need to convert a PAL DVD to NTSC for U.S. release. I’ve made a straight to DVD copy of it, and it looks okay but still has that slight jerky quality that you get. Any suggestions on how to get the best quality image when transferring from a PAL dvd? Is there something I can do in final cut pro?

    Hi Lynne,
If you want to make a NTSC DVD from an PAL DVD, you must convert the MPG2 to a PAL .mov (this with MPGStreamclip). Them you must to convert the PAL clip to NTSC (Nattresse Standard Conversion, Shake,..) and them make an MPG2 NTSC.
I’m not sure if will be worth all this process. However, if you go to try, I would suggest you when converting the original PAL MPG2 to QT movie, export in DV50 or 8b Uncompress. At least you will get better picture from the DVD that if you export as DV or so.

Is it from film or video? If it’s video, do what Rafalaos suggested.

If it’s film, extract it like he said, slow the resulting QuickTime down to 24p with Cinema Tools, scale it down to NTSC in FCP (or Motion or AE) and encode it as 24p and it’ll look gorgeous.

    Regards,

    Uli

try using the frame controls feature of compressor, it should be the same as shake

it has presets to do standards conversion

problem is can be difficult to get the MPEG2 file from the dvd, any ideas on a mac.

Know there is open source ffmpeg style tools that convert to relevant codec and convert the ac3 dolby to pcm AIFF, but not got them to work really (not sure of legality either)

there is also this which could get well complex but could from the sounds of it convert a lot of files
