  • PAL DVDs still needed or just use NTSC?

I have a 23.97 HD source for an animated movie. The animation studio also provided 25fps HD video and audio (its a few minutes shorter on the 120min source so like sped up by 4%?).

Based on those sources would it be preferable to author a PAL or NTSC DVD for Britain and Europe? I’m in the U.S. and talked to someone in England and they said “Just do NTSC and make sure you get the region code correct.”

I know the DVD will trend to an older demographic that may have legacy DVD players…..but is that the recommendation you guys are seeing?

If the recommendation is to go PAL, do you know of somewhere I can send the DVD for testing since I do not have PAL equipment. I want to get field dominance etc. checked on native equipment.

    Thanks,
    -Chance

You can choose NTSC, as PAL-player could playback both, but NTSC-player wont be able to do the other way round.

The main advantage doing it in PAL is a (slightly) better SD-resolution. 720×576 (PAL) vs 720×480 (NTSC).

there is a reason why NTSC is not sold in PAL countries: it looks like crap.
firstly, resolution is even smaller and secondly and more importantly, the 30i would not be displayed correctly on most 50hz TV monitors.
in the US DVD is completely dead anyways, just go VOD there! and in europe people still like their DVDs – so give them good quality!

of go bluray because there everything is 23,98 or 24!
