We recently had a company in Pakistan shoot some video for us. They sent it over on a hard drive as Pal AVI. What do I need to convert this to a useable FCP format?

Open the files in QuickTime Pro, and export them as QT movies using the same pixel count for the frame size that the AVI files had. Then edit the QT movies.

If the AVI won’t playback in QT, check out this page for some further advice:

I’ve been struggling with the reverse – NTSC to PAL.

After converting in QT to .mov, it will playback in FCP, but mine was jerky due to it still being NTSC in a PAL timeline. You might use one of the many filters out there for FCP to convert standards.

I tried that- plays nice in quicktime, plays real jerky in FCP.
