Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy pal 24.98???

I was the Online editor on a 29.97 HD video I sent over to a post house to have a PAL HDCAM version transcoded thru a Snell & Wilcox Ikon. The tape I got back looked great. When I tried to capture the PAL tape into Final Cut in order to make a DVD I had problems.

I had my Kona 3 and the HDCAM deck referenced to my AJA Gen10 tri-level at 25, FCP properly set to capture PAL. After five minutes of capturing, the deck fell out of playback, creeped back, and eventually picked up as if it had dropped a frame. This would happen once for every five minutes of capturing. When it finally finished, FCP had all of the clips for every time it had rolled back, but they were not frame accurate across the breaks.

After much wasted time, I was successful at capturing the video with Capture Now and the Kona 3 referencing video from the deck instead of the Gen10. Even though I placed my captured video into a 25 frame sequence, the frames did not perfectly agree with the tape.

I’m guessing that somehow the Snell & Wilcox produced a pulled down PAL rate (24.98?), but I’m having problems wrapping my brain around it.

Does anybody have experience with this and can suggest a better workflow?

No such thing. PAL is 25 solid (thank goodness). I am wondering if you had the deck settings right when capturing.

I did triple check my Capture settings and I tried another PAL tape which worked just fine. I know that there is no official 25 frame pulldown. I have reason to believe that there is something going on with the Ukon that might be creating just that (that it is a better target to go from 29.97 to 24.98 than a proper 25). It did look really great.

if not specified to the house – they may not have compensated for the DF 29.97 conversion to the NON- Drop 25 (but should have)

if you check the kona control panel -it will tell you the incoming frame rate from over HDSDI.
