Ok I posted this in the after effects forum because it’s my tool of choice and the only one I know right now but im sure this is similar for most compositing software. I know that for still lockdown shots that if you shoot a background plate all you have to do is either clone out or make a subtraction mask to get rid of wire rigs and lets say tennis ball markers. My question is how is this done if the shot is moving around and you then can not shoot a background plate? Do you just go frame by frame with the clone tool and grab areas or pixels around the wire to cover it up? Any help, tutorials or links would be great . Thanks all

Wire removal is easy, because a wire removal tool just “stitches” the 2 sides of the wire together for you. In AE there is the free plug -in ‘simple wire removal’. Just set it’s points over the wire or hair and play with the thickness setting till it dissapears.

My favorite wire removel tool is in Commotion.

Thanks Chris. I know you can also roto out things but does anyone else know the best way to get rid of markers whether tape or tennis balls? Isnt this a known thing amongst compositors? Even a place of where to post or find techniques would be of great help.

the wire removal tool in ae is very basic and i wouldn’t recommend it. you could do much better using traditional methods… there aren’t a lot of web resources for rig/wire removal because every shot is so specific that it’s near impossible to say This Will Work To Get Rid of Wires. the best thing to do is google search + visit forums/tips pages on sites like fxguide.com.

and practise. the only way to learn how to do complex broadcast standard rig/wire removals is to practise. generally – if you can see the clone mark/matte line/whatever – then you haven’t painted it right. simply ‘getting rid of it’ isn’t the industry practise, so things like AE wire removal will ‘get rid of the wire’ – but anything slightly complex and you can see the seams. good luck

Try searching the COW Posts (archives) for “wire” and my name. I posted a wire-removal technique borrowed from Tim Sassoon.

Muiisal do you have any links or suggestions. I have Combustion , got it from school to learn but not sure on how to leanr the basics. I messed around with it for a bit but I would love to learn it for roto work and marker removing. I have painted tenis balls in a shot and no background plate. Whats the best way to do this?
