P2 Woes Spanned cards come in black

Well that worked. Changed it to an internal SATA for scratch and I get the whole clip. I guess spanned clips don’t like networked storage.
Any ideas?

Call Bob.
I am sure there’s a solution. I don’t think it has anything to do with spanned clips, it has more to do with the overall file size.
As a test, try copying the new QT file to the raid and see if it likes it now. I bet it doesn’t.

Copied a 15 Gig file to the RAID over no problem.

Well, at least we narrowed it down. In the future you L&T long clips to a separate drive until Bob tells you what switch to flip. I don’t know enough about that raid to know what to do. Sorry.

Spoke to Bob. He’s on the case. I guess Spanned clips don’t like shared storage. They play fine when copied back to the RAID. As a matter of fact, both editing systems can play them back at the same time, so it isn’t bandwidth… it’s…it’s…Gremlins! I tell you.

Only if you fed Gizmo after midnight…
I would guess it has to do with however the shared storage is ‘handshaking’ with the OS, but that’s a guess. It can’t figure out how to write files over 4 GB

So, the OS is able to write big files to the RAID just fine–via the Finder. But FCP, during L&T, can’t get it done? I recall reading something on these forums about FCP’s treatment of network storage, but I can’t find it. Can you export a large QT movie from FCP to the RAID all in one piece?

No luck, FCP can’t export the 5 Gig clip. It exported the whole clip but only 728.1mb came across to the SAN. So this might be a SAN issue with FCP? FCP can’t write large files to a SAN?

Yeah, something’s going on there. SAN hasn’t even arrived in Kalamazoo yet, so I can’t be much help! 😉

Here’s what I’ve learned. There is no problem with my SAN copying files from the Finder over 4 GBs. I can export an 18 GB HD file out of FCP 6.0.5 using export QuickTime Same as source make self contained file, no problem to the SAN.
What I cannot do is L&T spanned clips larger than 4 GB to the SAN, (I can to a local attached SATA drive no problem).
Once I have L&T a spanned clip larger than 4 GB, I cannot take that clip, now a .mov file, place it in a time line and export it using export QuickTime Same as source make self contained file, to the SAN.
It will go through the motions of exporting the clip, progress bar and all, but when it is done, the resulting clip is only 728.1 MB (original converted P2 spanned movie I’m trying to export is 4.79 GB).
There must be some meta data written to a converted P2 file over 4 GB that FCP doesn’t like when working with a SAN. Remember this is now a .mov file no longer MXF.
So the testing continues.
