  • P2-Preview unsupported from archive drive

Last year, Marc posted this question and no one responded. Now I’m having the same problem. Does anyone know the answer to this problem:

I have Panasonic’s P2 store drive and an external drive that I’m using to archive all my P2 footage on.

When I’m in FCP and I use the “Log and Transfer” feature to view and copy clips to the scratch disk *from* the P2 drive, the clips all show up nice and neat and are viewable in the preview window. However, when I’ve copied those exact same clips (contents folder and lastclip.txt) to my archiving drive, and I try to log and transfer, the clips show up perfectly, but FCP won’t let me see video previews, telling me “preview unsupported for this format”.

The files are the exact same ones I just saw with no problem from the P2 drive — merely now on another drive — any explanation as to why I’d see this?

    Thanks!

What format of p2 from what camera?

How is oyu external drive formatted? Fat32 by chance? If you are on a Mac, you need to be formatted for OSX extended.

IT’s the standard P2 format from the HVX200. Drive is os extended. Lots of pros are having this problem, even Shane Ross a few times. It must be a bug.

[Jonathan Skurnik] “It must be a bug.”

Yeah, must be. I have never seen this error and I have transferred terrabytes of p2 by now.

What format is the footage? I assume you’ve done the trash preferences routine?

Have you tried reinstalling FCP? Have you tried looking at the footage in the free P2CMS?

ALso, have you tried another hard drive?

It happens on every HD. Can you take me through the trash preferences routine, I don’t know about that.

    Download this:

    https://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm

    It’s free!

It will help trash (and also backup and restore prefs for when you need this again).

I’ve been working with P2 for awhile myself and had no problem of the sort but I just installed a new internal hard disk and is doing the same thing, the strange thing is that if I install the same disk in another computer it appears to be no problems. Any thought?

“Preview Unsupproted by this format” usually means the you have a weird symbol the name of your folder structure.

So if your CONTENTS folder is within a folder called Folder#1, you will get this error.

Keep folder names to words, letters and underscores.

I checked that, but it happens to all the P2 volumes I backed up on this drive regardless of the name, any other ideas?

What’s the name of the drive?

I had the same problem but after reading this, I renamed my HD with only letters and numbers, and worked. Thanks
