P2 mxfs into FCP 5.0.4
Posted by Alan Lacey on November 30, 2006 at 2:57 pmI’ve just been given a few mxf files copied off a Panasonic P2 drive and have been asked to incorporate them into an existing FCP project.
As things stand (FCP504,QT701,OSX10.4.6) they are unavailable, greyed out, will I have to download some extra files etc. or will this just not be possible before a FCP512 upgrade?
Thank you
Alan

November 30, 2006 at 4:07 pmI think you need to update your version of QT. I believe you need QT 7.1.3…but I forget the exact requirements off the top of my head.

November 30, 2006 at 4:20 pmApple does not support MXF. You must convert them to Quicktime, the only format Final Cut supports. That’s what the P2 import interface is for.

November 30, 2006 at 7:37 pmthanks guys,
Arrh Mike! ‘The P2 interface’ sounds like that what I need. What is it and will I be able to run it on my system – specs above.

November 30, 2006 at 8:29 pmUnless you have all the P2 CONTENTS you cannot just transfer a .mxf file
using Final Cut Pro. This is one shortcoming that Apple needs to address.
I also have Edius on PC for just such a situation. I can load a single
.mxf but must save as PhotoJpeg QT as Edius cannot output DVCPRO HD files… -

November 30, 2006 at 9:53 pmI have been playing with this…..
I can “re-build” a CONTENTS folder….
Using an old .XML file I could re-write some of
the info so that I could load an orphaned .mxf
file using P2 log.
I could then make a DVCPRO HD file.
I could not get it to load in FCP….
But the fact that I could at least get it to
load in P2 log is a good back-up.
You can open and edit the .XML file
with Text Editor…..
And you need to know about how long the file
is and how it was shot…. -

November 30, 2006 at 10:09 pmYou can rename DV, DVCPRO or DVCPRO50 based MXF files to .DV or .DIF
to make them compatible to QuickTime and FCP. The first two audio channels
are included as well … -

December 1, 2006 at 5:33 amYes you are correct. Just wanted to make sure
the original poster understood that. -

December 1, 2006 at 11:54 amthe original poster did thanks.
He’s also still having trouble getting these files into 504!
I managed to get hold of the P2 cards and transferred all the files across, the card folder opens at the ‘import p2 footage’ request, and of the 32 files (Dont know what settings these were shot at, the camera is new to the inexperienced cameraman) about half actually built thumbnails but none import. FCP says ‘one or more p2 clips failed to import: probably incomplete or corrupt clips’
My guess is he’s trying to run before he can walk and these are HD clips, so the filename changing argument wont work.
It’s a shame there is little information about the clips in the browser, only a thumbnail, media start and media end.
Think I might just give up on this and wait for the 512 upgrade that I have on order.
Thanks
Alan
