  • P2 Media Frame Rate in Final Cut 5.04 – is a “correction” even necessary?

    Hey everyone…

First: I APOLOGIZE deeply if this has come up several times, but I’ve scrolled through the forum and didn’t (quite) find the answer.

My issue is this: I’m working in FCP 5.04 and won’t be upgrading for another month or so.
I’m cutting P2 footage for the first time.
Upon importing, even though the footage was shot at 24p (not advanced), it shows up at 60fps.
Is it okay, since we aren’t going to film, to cut this footage as is? Is the 24p effect going to be less filmic?
OR should I downconvert the frame rate using a plugin?

I’m fine with either. I just want to be safe so I don’t get my head chopped off by the director in a few weeks. It’s a short and I figured it’d be a good way to cut my teeth with tapeless media…

Separately, there was footage shot in slo mo. Will I need to use a converter for these clips? This already seems like a “yes” from what info I’ve been able to dig up…

    Any info, feedback, etc. appreciated.
    Thanks to all….

If you didn’t shoot 24PN, then your footage will be 59.94 with the 24p look. It will still have that look, only it will take up more than twice the hard drive space.

You can shoot 24PN and compare the two if you want.

Did you shoot onto P2 cards, or the firestore? The firestore only captures footage at 59.94.

Just out of curiousity what’s holding back the upgrade? Surely not the price as it would be $99. Unless you need to trade projects with someone who is absolutely required by law to stay at 5.04 I can’t recommend the bump up to 5.1 highly enough. I consider it essential for HVX200 editing.

What makes 5.1 better on a G5 QUAD?

It’s not a question of processor power, it’s a question of bug fixes, new features, etc. 5.1 is very focused on P2 so for an HVX200 user it’s a no-brainer.

5.1 ist faster, even on PPCs.

Hi, we shot in 24p. So, hence the 60fps. That helps. Thank you. So, is it NOT necessary for us to convert the frame rate to get rid of the extra frames? Would this just be a bunch of unnecessary extra work?
    Thanks everyone…

Not if you’re strictly staying on tv. If you want to do a true progressive 24p DVD or a filmout though- yes it’s critical.

Thanks. I think that pretty much answers the key questions. Can I do the frame rate conversion with DVC PRO HD FRAME RATE CONVERTER well enough? Or should I just have the director stick it out for the upgrade (another couple weeks) of FCP to eliminate many of the concerns…?

As for “why not upgrading?”…. I appreciate that advice and I will be upgrading in about two more weeks… but I’m working on another project that is only 5.04 at their main site.. That project is larger, more intensive and already set to air… and I don’t want any issues creeping up when swapping project files (from me to them). If this all sounds like intermediate paranoia, it sure is…he heh. Bear with me.

This is all very helpful. Thanks.

The FRC plugin is not related to pulldown it is for slow motion and hi speed shots.
