September 23, 2005 at 12:58 pmNone of these cameras (hvx200, xdcamhd, infinity) exist yet, so about everything here is theory.
Is that bad?Maybe somebody could scientifically calculate the average picture quality of certain clip in 35Mbps 15 frames GOP 1080p30 mpeg2 compared to 100Mbps intraframe compressed dvcprohd 1080p30?
With what factor interframe compression can do (visually) lossless compression? One thing for sure is that long-GOP material needs much more processing power to edit.
Other thing might be that fine details that seems to be unchanged in intraframe compression, usually does “live” in interframe compression, because the detail level depends on the other pictures in the GOP. -

September 23, 2005 at 1:23 pmMPEG2 is usually between 1.5 and 2.5 times as efficient as a similar DCT type codec, but obviously, it’s footage and implementation dependent.

September 23, 2005 at 2:28 pmActually the HD XDCAM shown at IBC is fully working and in full existence.
Some other little factoids about HD XDCAM that you might find interesting. Firstly it can use a variable bitrate mode. This is not possible on tape, but it has been implemented into HD XDCAM. AFAIK HD XDCAM uses a shorter GOP of around 6 frames.
Because of the cache available and the faster than realtime writing to disc, perhaps even 2 pass encoding might be possible in the future?

September 23, 2005 at 5:06 pmI’ve heard rumour of a UK price for the XDCam camera and if it’s true it is going to be interesting!

September 24, 2005 at 6:14 amI think you misunderstand point I’m not talking about 1/3″ CCD but 2/3″CCD camera like HDX 400 with recording on P2, not on tapes and in 1080i is 100mb/sec full frame and not with GOPs.

September 24, 2005 at 6:19 amIt is the same story as Infinity “camera is coming” but Thomson already put the price of Infinity under Euro 20000.

September 24, 2005 at 6:35 amBut, that is not P2 HD megapixel camera. Still quite nice standard DVCPRO 25/50 and DV camera.

September 24, 2005 at 4:22 pmTrouble is the Sony HD XDCAM is 1080i but rumour has it the BBC in the UK wants to ditch interlace and go 720P -1080P and the EBU are also in favour of progressive so if your in Europe it might be best to wait .

September 24, 2005 at 5:39 pmNo. From what I know of the HD XDCAM it is 720p 1080i switchable.
