  • P2 FCP capture – studio cant see clips in QT now – only i can?!

Posted by Lisa Rolley on March 4, 2009 at 8:25 pm

So i just captured off a p2 for a studio using latest fcp – but ae designers and creatives alike are unable to view this footage in ae & quicktime.

I tried giving everyone my qt codecs from my library but still no luck.

Now i am transcoding them to animation codec but i am concerned about loosing a generation on this stuff – any thoughts – what am i doing wrong?? Iam pretty sure i nthe past giving others my codecs has worked so iam nto sure what is going on – maybe they need to restart computers??

    thanks

Well, the codecs are LEGALLY only available to those computers that have FCP installed. Handing them out to others is a breach of contract, and as you notice, not always a success.

If you need other people to have access to this footage as High Quality, then after you import you can convert to ProRes, that does have a higher data rate. Then the clients and AE artists can download the ProRes decoder codecs from Apple. But when they render something out to give back to you, it won’t be ProRes, as they cannot encode to prores, they will have to render out as Animation. And Animation is designed to be lossless.

Or exporting ANIMATION for the AE artists and getting back Animation is fine too. That is what the codec is designed for, lossless transfer to and from applications and platforms. But the file sizes are huge.

Hey shane thanks for the quick response much appreciated.

I did not know my library codecs were a breach of contracts or in ANY way violating something…as a freelancer i have seen it to be a fairly common process in order to simply view files in quicktime – its not caopying programs or anything like that it is simply for everyone else to be able to use and watch down in quicktime…i just used qt pro to transcode the files to animation and yes it did make the file size larger but i dont see any loss in quality in the footage.

thanks and if you or any one else has thoughts on this please feel free to chime in : )

[Lisa Rolley] “So i just captured off a p2 for a studio using latest fcp – but ae designers and creatives alike are unable to view this footage in ae & quicktime. “

You mean you log and tranferred footage from the MXFs to Quicktime?

So now you are trying to give them Quicktime movies?

Mac or PC? DVCPro HD or AVC-I?

dvcpro on a mac – people trying to view them down in quikctime but cannot – thought giving them my codecs for quicktime would resolve the problem and in the past it has but this time not – what could be going on?

Thanks for your responses – i;ll look into the AE update as well

Have them dowload and install P2CMS from Panasonic (it’s free).

This installs a DVCPro HD codec that will allow them to watch the movies in QT…or should anyway.

DVCpro…as in dvcPro, dv25? Or DVCPro HD?

    Dude…serious?

OK, I’m gonna install this on my wife’s machine and see if this works…

    If so, this is big.

I cant seem to find it when i google it – can either of you guys help me with a link? its always so annoying to have to convert to animation for everyone to use these qt files!?!

this also happens to me with stuff the i capture at 10 but uncompressed (black magic) ae guys and producers a like cant seem to ever atch them and when i try to give them my codecs it still does not work – i believe outside of fcp these files should be viewable with the proper downloaded codecs – whether it be blackmagic / p2/ pro res etc…i would love to get a good link for all of those in order to put the codecs on ae / maya / and producers comp’s – both PC & Mac

If anyone has info let me know

Shane, would I lie to you on purpose? 😉

    Lisa,

For PC users you will need a third party codec to read Mac created DVCProHD QT movies. Calibratred software makes one.

    P2CMS:
    https://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/p2-hd/support.asp

For Uncompressed, you can download free codecs from AJA to use Mac created uncompressed movies.

    ProRes Decoder for windows:
