p2 card files editing problem
Posted by Samuel Klay on September 5, 2008 at 5:03 pmIn Final Cut Pro 5.0.4, I successfully imported P2 card files from external drives using the import Panasonic P2 option in the drop down menu. The clips look fine in the viewer, but for some reason require rendering once inserted into the timeline.

#28 Having to render every clip in the timeline
Shane’s Stock Answer #28: When I put a clip in the timline, I have to render it before it will play. Why?
Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.

September 5, 2008 at 9:38 pmThanks guys. I checked my settings and they seem to line up. I neglected to mention earlier that the files were imported into a preexisting project, with edited footage already in the sequences. I need to be able to intercut the new footage with the old.

September 7, 2008 at 12:59 amHi, sorry for the delay. Footage was shot in HD on the HVX200 using p2 cards. The old footage was shot in the same format, the only differences being the size of the cards (4g for old, 32g for new), and the computers used during filming. The first time around it was a G4 running Final Cut 5.0.4, and we needed to use a p2 card reader to dump the cards. The new footage was dumped on a newer mac that has a p2 card slot. I don’t know what version of Final Cut they were running.
Also, when I received the old footage it already had capture scratch files, and I was able to import them as using “import – folders.” This time, there were no capture scratch files, and I was only able to import the files using the Panasonic p2 option.
I’m using a G5, and Final Cut 5.0.4.
Please let me know if there is other info that would be helpful. Thanks again for your help.

March 9, 2010 at 5:01 amHi There,
I am having the same problem.
I shot on the Panasonic HVX200. we shot 1080 24p HD.
I did the panasonic P2 import with FCP (v5.0.4)
I changed my sequence settings to 1280×1080 16:9 HD
pixel aspect ratio-HD 1280×1080)
this seems to match my clip settings so I am very confused as to why i have to render clips in the timeline? My clip settings are:
vid rate 29.97 fps
frame size 1280×1080
pixel aspect DVCPRO HD 1080i60thanks!

March 9, 2010 at 3:30 pmHi Sam,
In sequence settings, advanced, I chose 23.98. then i get an error message “frame rate change ignored. use the editing timebase to specify the frame rate preset”
I will be honest, this is my first time editing footage from p2 cards. perhaps I was supposed to set the audio/video settings specifically before importing the footage and creating the .MOV files?
don’t you just love post…..

Nope. Since it’s a digital transfer, there’s really nothing to set, especially with DVCPro HD as it work natively within FCP.
Choose the 1080i60 DVCPro HD easy setup by hitting control-q, then make a new sequence. Then drop in a clip in to that new sequence after you open it by double clicking.
Better?
