P2 Archiving
Hi, I am having P2 archive issues.
We are using Avid Media Composer systems and have just gotten HD cameras that use up to 5 P2 cards at a time. (We bought the brand new 16 gig cards straight from Japan!)
They work fine straight into the machine but we would like to archive the footage for future (and other project) use.
Some of the archive stuff I’ve read on the internet talk about archiving each 4 gig card to a 4.7 gig DVD but due to the card size we are going to have to use blu-ray to archive ours.
So this is what I try:
* I open the DVD burning software
* I copy the data on the card (or fire store hard drive) to the DVD burning software.
* I burn the DVD.(We would like to do something like this for EVERYthing we shoot because we are forever delving into the library for a past shot of this or that…)
Then I would like to open the Avid and have it recognize the data on the DVD. (or better, copy from the DVD to the media drive on the computer and have it recognize from there) And it doesn’t! It keeps asking for a P2 source. I feel like I’ve left out a step and for some reason I can’t see it.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Jennifer, we’ve recently begun a P2 workflow and are experiencing some challenges in archiving as well. Our Adrenaline isn’t new enough to recognize P2 data, so I’m stuck copying audio/video clips to the media drives and losing all the yummy metadata. For those projects I’m simply rolling of tapes of footage that I want to keep. I know it’s old school, but it works.
Our Xpress Pro does have the import function though. When you copy the P2 card info, make sure you copy ALL of it. My understanding is that Avid has to see the entire folderized structure to recognize footage as “P2”. If you’re spanning information across multiple Blu-Ray discs, I would reassemble it in one place before asking Avid to import it.
As I said, we’re new at this too. I hope this helps. As one astute observer mentioned, time gained by capturing to/from P2 is merely shifted to the backend archiving step… at least until the fully digital workflow is in place.

Thanks, I posted this here and on the Panasonic list and someone there suggested copying the entire card. I did that and the system recognized the DVD as a p2 source. (Yay!) It even recognized two cards if I put them in separate directories (“Card 1” and “Card 2”)
Now the problem is that it won’t relink after the media has been deleted. (I’d like to be able to feed the disks back in one-at-a-time and have the Avid re-build the program just as it would do with tapes)
It’s not happening.
We might end up having to go back to tape, too.
I appreciate your suggestions. If you make a breakthrough, please share it! There are probably others with the same problems.
